How to pick the right residency program 👩🏻‍⚕️

Pick the *right * residency program is beyond stressful, because what even IS the RIGHT program?? I don't think anything can make the experience less stressful but this is what worked for me:

1. Identify what your priority is- location? research availability? Salary? For me location was a top priority, but others have goals for fellowships/ etc that means they look for more academic programs.

2. Casting a wide net is helpful ( applying to a lot of programs)- the more applications= the higher chances you get an interview = higher chances to match. This can also be difficult if you're limited to a geographic area like I was.

I personally stuck to this method to finalize my rank list so hope this helps !

... Read morePicking your residency is just the first hurdle – thriving in it and setting yourself up for future career goals, like a competitive fellowship, is the next big challenge! I remember feeling overwhelmed, but looking back, there are definite strategies that can give you a 'power boost' in your medical journey. One thing I can't stress enough is the importance of mentorship. While you're busy identifying your priorities for the match, also keep an eye out for potential mentors during your interviews. Once in residency, actively seek out attendings or senior residents whose careers you admire. They can provide invaluable guidance, open doors to research opportunities, and even write powerful letters of recommendation for fellowships. My own mentor helped me navigate complex research projects and introduced me to key figures in my subspecialty, which was a game-changer. Don't underestimate networking, even within your own program. Get to know your co-residents, fellows, and other faculty members. These connections aren't just for social support; they're professional relationships that can lead to collaborations, job opportunities, or even future fellowship positions. Attending departmental grand rounds, conferences, and even informal social gatherings can broaden your professional circle significantly. Think of it as 'casting a wide net' for your future career, not just for applications. For those eyeing a specific fellowship, research and publications are often crucial. Even if research wasn't a top priority when you picked your program, make an effort to get involved. Small projects, case reports, or quality improvement initiatives can build your CV. Many programs offer dedicated research time or mentors who can help you get started. I found that even contributing to a poster presentation gave me a huge confidence boost and something concrete to talk about in fellowship interviews. Finally, strategic elective choices can make a huge difference. Use your elective blocks wisely to explore subspecialties that interest you, especially those you might pursue for a fellowship. This not only helps you confirm your passion but also allows you to work closely with faculty in that field, further strengthening your network and potentially leading to more research or publication opportunities. It’s about being proactive and intentionally building the skills and connections that will propel you towards your next career step. Remember, every decision during residency, big or small, contributes to your overall 'power boost' for whatever comes next in your medical career!
