Managing your 💰 as a resident doctor

As resident doctors we are RARELY taught on how to manage our finances and it's truly SUCH an important part of residency and even after- especially since most of us rely no student loans to get to this point.

I highly recommend having a meeting with your loan agency to assess the best repayment plan- lately they've had the SAVE plan which allows you to pay your loan back based off of your income.

Another important skill is learning how to budget what you make- many of us have been in school for 10+ years, so building this skill ( using an app for example) can really help set you up for success.

First, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with various repayment options available, which can significantly ease your financial burden. The SAVE plan, for example, could be an excellent choice as it adjusts your monthly payments based on your income, providing much-needed relief during residency. Another crucial aspect is budgeting. Utilize financial management apps to track your income and expenses effortlessly. This skill will empower you to make informed financial decisions, whether you're saving for further education, investing, or planning for a major purchase. Moreover, consider seeking advice from financial advisors who specialize in medical professionals—this investment pays off in long-term financial health. Networking with peers can also offer valuable insights; many resident doctors face similar financial challenges and can share strategies that have worked for them. Lastly, always keep an eye on your expenses related to residency, such as housing, food, and travel, and make adjustments as necessary to stay within your budget.
