Psychiatry Residency Curriculum 👩🏻‍⚕️

Psychiatry residency is FOUR years:

First year consists of rotations in off service specialties such as internal medicine, emergency medicine and neurology. Then you start on inpatient psychiatry.

Second year has a mix of inpatient, outpatient, emergency department and consult liaison. Depending on the program third year is typically mostly outpatient with fourth year being electives ( child and adolescent, forensic, etc. ). What other questions do you have about Psych Residency? 👩‍⚕️

... Read morePsychiatry residency programs are structured to provide a thorough grounding in various key disciplines. During the first year, residents engage in rotations in off-service specialties such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, and neurology to gain comprehensive clinical skills. In the second year, the focus broadens to include inpatient services, outpatient care, and consult-liaison roles, allowing residents to interact with a diverse patient population and develop their diagnostic and therapeutic skills. The third year is primarily outpatient, which offers further refinement of clinical skills and deepening relationships with patients. The final year allows for greater specialization through electives such as child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, or addiction medicine. These choices enable residents to explore their interests and prepare for their future careers. Additionally, the residency experience fosters strong mentorship relationships, essential for professional growth and development in the field. Prospective residents often wonder not only about the curriculum but also about life balance, mentorship opportunities, and the impact of their chosen specialties. If you have more questions about the Psychiatry residency or want insights from current residents, engaging in forums or discussions is greatly encouraged! The transition to residency is a pivotal time in a physician's career, and having clear information can help demystify the process.
