First call shift as a resident doctor ??

Picture this: it’s 2 a.m., and you’re managing everything from a psychiatric crisis in the emergency room to a patient on the inpatient unit refusing their meds. The unpredictability is real—and it hits fast.

First, stay organized. Keep your notes handy and always have a plan B, because things change constantly.

Second, don't be afraid to ask for help.

Third, take a moment to breathe. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but a calm mind makes clearer decisions.

And finally, trust your training. You know more than you think.

... Read moreManaging your first call shift as a resident doctor can be overwhelming. Apart from the unpredictability that strikes at any hour, effective communication plays a pivotal role. Always ensure you establish clear lines of communication with your colleagues and supervisors to discuss any concerns or uncertainties. Integrating well with your team can help you handle complex situations more efficiently. Moreover, familiarize yourself with hospital protocols and available resources to enhance your decision-making. Quick access to emergency contacts and understanding the chain of command are vital. Remember, you are not alone; knowing when and how to delegate can be crucial during tough moments. Seek guidance when needed and don’t hesitate to lean on experienced colleagues. Mental wellness cannot be overlooked in this high-stress profession. Allocate time for self-care, whether it’s quick breaks to recharge, meditation to maintain focus, or light exercise to relieve stress between shifts. Practicing mindfulness can ultimately lead to better patient care as it helps manage emotional responses in high-stakes situations. Utilize technology to your advantage; apps designed for medical professionals can assist with quick access to guidelines, drug information, and patient notes. Stay organized not just physically, but digitally as well—having everything in order reduces the chances of errors and enhances overall patient safety. Finally, reflect on each shift to identify lessons learned, which can be instrumental in evolving your approach to future encounters. Embracing feedback, whether from peers or mentors, allows for continuous improvement in your practice as a resident doctor.
