A blue bulb standing beside a yellow bulb doesn’t turn the yellow bulb blue. The yellow bulbs bear a similar image to the blue bulb but they still are different. God created man in His image or His likeness. God didn’t create man based on His identity. This simply means mankind bears the fingerprints of God’s hand because mankind is His design, His construct, His art. Just as if someone touches your clothes, their fingerprints will be on you and visible to others through a microscope. That doesn’t mean their identity morphs into yours and takes you over. You don’t cease being you just because someone touched you. You are still you. You are still you when God touches you too. It is only in you submitting to the Holy Spirit to change you into the image of Christ that you begin loosing the identity you used to hold. This is why when we come to Christ, we go through a process of losing our way of life and our self to take on His way of living and learn to mimic His identity. His Holy Spirit teaches us how Christ thinks, how He behaves, how He acts, how He reacts, how He feels, how He decides, how He speaks and how He moves. If we don’t actively participate in this discipleship, i.e. change process, we will continue to carry His fingerprint, but not assume His identity. Which means all the blessings that come along with His identity are available to us, but not all secured by us. Relationship with Christ isn’t designed or meant to be a partnership where two walk together side by side. As in He keeps His identity and you keep yours. It’s designed to be a Godly takeover. The closer you walk with Him, the more He takes over who you are and the less there is of the old you that remains. He exchanges your life for His. Your sin for His righteousness. God isn’t looking for a partnership with you. He’s chasing oneness with you.
From my own spiritual walk, I’ve realized that understanding the difference between bearing God’s fingerprint and embodying His identity is crucial to developing a deeper relationship with Christ. Many believers cherish the blessings that come from knowing God, yet sometimes struggle with fully surrendering their old self to let Christ’s life take over. This transformation is not automatic—it requires intentional daily discipleship, where we actively seek to learn how Christ thinks, behaves, and moves. I once viewed my faith as a partnership, where God and I maintained separate identities but walked side by side. However, this article helped me grasp that God desires something deeper: a Godly takeover where my identity increasingly merges into His. This process can bring challenges, as it involves letting go of familiar patterns and comfortable ways of living. But it also brings incredible peace, as the old self gradually fades and Christ's righteousness becomes the foundation of my life. The analogy of the blue and yellow bulbs stuck with me—the yellow bulb retains its own color even when beside the blue bulb, just as we retain our uniqueness even as God's fingerprint rests on us. But when we submit to the Holy Spirit’s change, something beautiful happens; the Holy Spirit gradually shapes us into Christ’s likeness, teaching us how to respond and live as He would. This dynamic discipleship means engaging in prayer, scripture reading, and being sensitive to the Spirit’s guidance daily. It’s a journey of exchange—our sin and old life given up for Christ’s righteousness and new life. And while the process can be gradual, the goal is intimate oneness with God, not just external blessings or partnership. From personal experience, embracing this truth has deepened my faith, encouraged a more surrendered lifestyle, and brought richer blessings that flow from truly living in Christ’s identity.
