Sustainable Swaps ♻️

What are you doing in your home that that might seem small but could have a lasting impact?

We are trying our best to make more sustainable, healthy, lower toxic swaps like:

•compostable sandwich bags

•compostable trash bags

•compostable vacuum seal bags

•practice plastic recycling

•moving to glassware and stoneware

•canning homegrown products

•processing venison

•switching from disposable cotton rounds to washable

•up-cycle “trash” (jars, milk crates, plastic containers, toilet paper rolls, etc.)

•reusable cups and water bottles

I really want a gravity water filter to eliminate plastic bottle waste at home, but being on a boiled water advisory 8 months of the last year had our hands tied at the time.

... Read moreMaking small changes towards sustainability at home can feel empowering and impactful. One of the easiest swaps I've found is replacing regular sandwich and trash bags with compostable alternatives. Brands like Hectolife offer compostable trash bags and sandwich bags that break down more naturally, reducing landfill waste significantly. These bags work well and give peace of mind knowing they’re eco-friendly. In addition to compostable bags, shifting away from plastic wherever possible helps immensely. I’ve transitioned to glassware and stoneware for food storage and serving, which not only looks nicer but also lasts longer and is easier to clean without worrying about chemical leaching. If you grow your own fruits or vegetables, canning those homegrown products not only preserves freshness but also cuts down on packaging waste. Switching to washable cotton rounds instead of disposables has been a small change with a surprisingly big effect. It reduces waste and feels great on the skin. Similarly, upcycling items like jars, milk crates, and toilet paper rolls into storage or planters is a fun way to reuse “trash” creatively. Reusable water bottles and cups have become essentials for reducing single-use plastic. Although I hoped to install a gravity water filter system at home to further cut plastic bottle use, living under a boiled water advisory for much of last year delayed those plans. Still, even practicing diligent plastic recycling contributes positively. In my experience, these sustainable swaps not only reduce environmental impact but also nurture a healthier living space. Each small step contributes to less toxic exposure and waste. If you’re starting out, focus on swaps that fit naturally into your lifestyle so they stick over time. Together, these mindful choices build a more sustainable home and planet one swap at a time.
