Why Does God Allow Suffering? What The Bible Actually Says 📖

If God is loving, why does suffering exist?

This is one of the most difficult questions people ask, and the Bible doesn’t ignore it. From Job and David to Paul and even Jesus Himself, Scripture speaks honestly about pain, hardship, grief, and suffering.

While the Bible does not answer every question, it does reveal several truths we can trust.

According to Scripture, suffering exists because we live in a fallen world affected by sin (Romans 5:12). Ever since humanity’s rebellion in Genesis 3, the world has experienced pain, disease, death, injustice, and brokenness.

Yet the Bible also teaches that God can use suffering for His purposes.

📖 To strengthen our faith (1 Peter 1:6-7)

📖 To produce perseverance and maturity (James 1:2-4)

📖 To draw us closer to Him (Psalm 34:18)

📖 To teach dependence on His grace (2 Corinthians 12:9)

📖 To conform us more to Christ (Romans 8:29)

One of the clearest examples is Joseph. What others intended for evil, God used for good to save many lives (Genesis 50:20).

The Bible also reminds us that suffering is not a sign that God has abandoned us.

❤️ God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18)

❤️ God hears our prayers (Psalm 145:18)

❤️ Jesus understands suffering firsthand (Hebrews 4:15)

❤️ Nothing can separate believers from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39)

Most importantly, Christianity is unique because God did not remain distant from human suffering. Jesus entered our world, suffered, was rejected, crucified, and rose again so that one day suffering itself would be defeated.

The Bible ends with a promise:

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more” (Revelation 21:4).

We may not understand every trial we face, but Scripture teaches that God remains sovereign, good, and faithful through them all.

Save this post for encouragement during difficult seasons and share it with someone who needs hope today.

... Read moreReflecting on my own experiences, I’ve found that understanding suffering through a biblical lens really changes how we cope with life’s hardships. The Bible not only acknowledges the reality of suffering but also offers profound insights into why it exists and how God uses it for good purposes. For instance, Romans 5:12 explains that suffering entered the world through sin, and this fallen state affects us all. In times of personal trials, I’ve come to see that suffering can deepen my faith (1 Peter 1:6-7), helping me to develop perseverance and spiritual maturity (James 1:2-4). When I focus too much on my pain, I forget that God is near the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) and provides the grace I need to endure (2 Corinthians 12:9). I’ve also learned that suffering can draw us closer to God, teaching us to rely on His strength rather than our own. One story that particularly encouraged me was Joseph’s—from betrayal and hardship to being used by God to save many lives (Genesis 50:20). It’s a powerful reminder that God can turn even the worst circumstances into something good. Moreover, the Bible reassures us that suffering is never a sign of God’s absence or abandonment. Jesus, who understands our pain firsthand (Hebrews 4:15), invites us to bring our anxieties and burdens to Him. And as I’ve experienced, worship and prayer during tough times offer comfort and hope. Finally, the promise found in Revelation 21:4—that God will wipe away every tear and there will be no more death or sorrow—gives us an eternal perspective. Suffering is temporary, but God’s love and glory are everlasting. Holding onto these truths has been essential in my faith journey, providing encouragement during difficult seasons and reminding me that God's plan is always good.
