My supervisor loves to lie and gaslight everytime
Just looking for general tips around dealing with this type of manager. She isn't very bright and it's fairly apparent she has no idea what she is doing but yet has the managerial role. She will often flatten employees by talking louder than them and telling them they are wrong. She consistently tells people that she didn't do or say something that she actually did. She is also the biggest know-it-all but actually knows very little. Just want some tips/techniques on dealing with people like her for me and my colleagues! So do you have any tips for dealing with this type who uses gaslighting and manipulation to get her way?
Dealing with a manager who exhibits gaslighting and manipulative behaviors can be both mentally draining and challenging. Gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation where a person causes others to doubt their own perceptions or memories, often leaves employees feeling confused, invalidated, and powerless. When this behavior comes from a supervisor, it can disrupt team morale, reduce productivity, and increase stress levels. Here are some effective methods to cope with such situations: 1. **Document Everything:** Keep a detailed record of interactions, emails, meetings, and any incidents where your supervisor contradicts facts or manipulates information. This documentation can serve as evidence if you need to escalate the issue to higher management or HR. 2. **Maintain Professionalism:** Despite the provocation, always respond politely and calmly. Avoid raising your voice even if the supervisor uses intimidation tactics like talking louder to overpower you. 3. **Seek Support:** Discuss your experiences confidentially with trusted colleagues to confirm that you are not alone and to strategize collective responses. It’s often easier to address toxic behavior when there is a group perspective. 4. **Set Boundaries:** Clarify your responsibilities and ask for tasks or feedback in writing. This makes it harder for your supervisor to deny actions or distort information later on. 5. **Use Assertive Communication:** Practice clear, assertive communication to stand your ground without being confrontational. Techniques include using “I” statements and calmly stating facts. 6. **Prioritize Self-Care:** Working under such pressure can impact your mental health. Engage in activities outside work that help you relax and decompress. 7. **Understand Your Rights:** Familiarize yourself with your company’s policies on workplace harassment and manipulation. If necessary, report the behavior through appropriate channels. 8. **Seek Professional Help:** If workplace gaslighting severely affects your well-being, consider consulting a mental health professional for guidance. Notably, a viral social media message asking for the "BEST tip for surviving a corporate job in your 20s" emphasizes that beyond practical daily advice like meal prepping or ergonomic equipment, dealing with difficult managers is a life-changing skill. Building emotional resilience and mastering conflict resolution are crucial elements. By applying these strategies, employees can better navigate toxic managerial behavior, protect their well-being, and maintain a productive work environment despite challenges like those posed by supervisors who lie, gaslight, or manipulate.
