Get Your Kids to Listen, The First Time ✨

As a psychologist, I’m decoding why the countdown is actually a “Leak” in your parenting. When we count down, we are accidentally teaching our children that they don’t actually have to listen until we hit “1.”

If you want your kids to behave and listen the first time, you need a more resilient system. Watch my video for the 3 clinical rules that I teach my clients so their kids listen the first time.✨

... Read moreFrom my own experience with parenting, I’ve found that relying on countdowns to get kids to listen often backfires. The countdown unintentionally signals to children that they have a certain amount of time to delay obedience, which can make them less responsive. Instead, I switched to setting clear expectations and using positive reinforcement right away, which made a noticeable difference in how promptly my children responded. One effective technique I implemented involves clear, calm communication paired with immediate consequences or rewards. For example, instead of counting down, I say directly what I expect and follow through consistently. I also focus on praising my children when they obey promptly, which motivates them to listen the first time in the future. Another key insight is that children's listening is deeply connected to how they feel emotionally. When kids feel respected and understood, they are more willing to cooperate. So, I make an effort to validate their feelings before giving instructions. This builds trust and reduces resistance. Incorporating these strategies into daily interactions has not only improved listening but also strengthened our relationship. While it takes patience and practice, the payoff in smoother communication at home is well worth it.
