Most people don’t recognize grooming until it’s already happening.
It doesn’t look obvious.
It doesn’t sound dangerous.
It sounds… familiar.
“This is our secret.”
“You’re so mature.”
“Don’t tell your parents.”
That’s how it starts.
Predators don’t lead with force — they lead with language.
If your child doesn’t know how to recognize it,
they won’t know when to question it.
Teach them the phrases.
Teach them the red flags.
Teach them that secrets about adults are never safe.
Because awareness isn’t paranoia — it’s protection.
Stay aware. Stay loud.
From my own experience, I’ve realized just how important it is to openly discuss the reality of grooming with children. Predators rarely use overt force; instead, they use seemingly innocent language that creates trust and secrecy. Phrases like “This is our secret,” or “You’re so mature,” might sound flattering or familiar, but they are often red flags for grooming behavior. In particular, it’s crucial to clarify to children that anyone asking them to keep secrets about adults is not safe. Grooming often happens quietly within trusted relationships—sometimes family members, close friends, or authority figures rather than strangers. This makes it even harder for kids to recognize the danger. To empower children, I found it helpful to role-play conversations where kids learn to question suspicious language and feel confident saying no. Teaching the exact phrases predators use can alert children to danger earlier. For example, if someone says, "Don’t tell your parents," children should be encouraged to immediately report the conversation to a trusted adult. It’s equally important to normalize these discussions to avoid instilling unnecessary fear or paranoia. Awareness means protection—it’s about giving kids tools to identify discomfort and speak up. Remember, grooming isn’t always dramatic and does not always involve physical intimidation. Often, it’s the subtle, repeated use of language that breaks down boundaries. If you’re a parent, caregiver, or educator, regularly talking about safe and unsafe touches along with these dangerous phrases can make a life-saving difference. Being loud and proactive about these conversations protects children and creates a culture where predators have fewer opportunities to manipulate. Staying aware of the language used and educating children openly helps build resilience against grooming. It also reinforces that children should never feel ashamed or afraid to share anything that makes them uncomfortable. This awareness truly transforms protection from abstract to immediate and practical.
