... Read moreCodependency often traps you in a cycle where your actions revolve entirely around another person's needs, especially an abuser’s. Over time, this dynamic erodes your self-worth and identity, making it hard to envision life differently. From my experience and many shared stories, the first and most powerful step in healing codependency is acknowledging it's not your responsibility to fix or rescue the abuser. It’s a difficult truth, but liberating once accepted. Setting clear personal boundaries is essential. This means deciding not to respond to abusive behavior, avoiding getting drawn into arguments, and limiting contact when needed. Though challenging, maintaining these boundaries gradually rebuilds your sense of self. Seeking support from trusted friends, family, or professionals offers a valuable outlet. Talking to a counselor or therapist familiar with codependency can uncover underlying causes and teach healthy coping strategies. Remember to be patient with yourself—healing is a process. Allow time to regain your independence, re-establish your identity, and nurture your own needs alongside others'. You're not alone on this journey, and recovery is possible with consistent effort and support.
