Attending the 6th National Counselling and Psychotherapy Conference was a profound experience that truly expanded my understanding of mental health issues and therapeutic approaches. One discussion that stood out was around the common misconception of clients self-diagnosing with conditions such as eating disorders (ED) without professional evaluation. It highlighted the importance of clear communication and accurate diagnosis in therapy. The conference emphasized innovative counselling techniques and the role of empathy in fostering client trust. Workshops showcased practical interventions for anxiety and trauma that can be applied in everyday practice. Additionally, it became evident that ongoing education for counsellors is critical in keeping up with evolving psychological research and societal changes. What I found particularly valuable was the networking opportunity with professionals from diverse backgrounds, which enriched perspectives on handling complex cases. Sharing experiences about overcoming stigma and encouraging clients to seek help was inspirational. Overall, the conference reaffirmed that while awareness of mental health is growing, misconceptions still pose challenges. Continued dialogue and education like this conference are essential to advancing the quality and accessibility of mental health care.
