Vaping may seem harmless to some because of the absence of smoke and the often sweet or fruity smell, but this very odor is a sign of toxic chemical particles polluting the air we share.
Living in an environment where vaping occurs regularly, especially near shared public areas like malls and transport hubs, I have experienced symptoms such as burning eyes, persistent headaches, and dizziness, which align with reported reactions to secondhand vape exposure. These symptoms underscore how vaping can exacerbate respiratory conditions and cause lasting discomfort.
It's important to recognize that vaping in public isn't a private act. Tiny particles from vapor linger in the air, exposing others to nicotine, heavy metals like lead and tin, formaldehyde, and other carcinogens. Vulnerable populations—including children with developing lungs, pregnant individuals at risk of complications, and people recovering from illnesses like cancer—are particularly harmed. Even people with asthma or sinus issues can suffer immediate attacks triggered by vape exposure.
In Singapore, strict laws prohibit vaping in all public spaces, including HDB estates, shopping malls, elevators, and the MRT. Penalties for violating these laws include hefty fines and even jail time. Despite this, enforcement remains a challenge as many still vape openly, disregarding the harmful impact and legal restrictions.
From my perspective, raising awareness is critical. When encountering someone vaping publicly, approaching them politely to explain the rules and health concerns can help foster understanding and compliance. Supporting policies and community efforts to reduce public vaping ultimately helps protect public health and promotes cleaner air for all.
If you or someone you know struggles with vaping addiction, there are resources and support networks available to help quit and reduce harm. Ultimately, creating vape-free public spaces benefits everyone by ensuring the air we breathe remains clean and safe.
