I'd recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes, as some parts of the trail, including the initial approach and sections beyond the catwalk, can be uneven dirt paths. Don't forget to bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days. The trail is generally well-maintained, but sun exposure can be a factor. I found late spring or early fall to be the perfect time to visit; the vibrant green foliage was incredible, and the weather was just right – not too hot, not too cold. Plus, seeing the Hood River's clear turquoise waters against the autumn colors or spring blooms is simply magical.
