Are you shampooing wrong?
From a licensed cosmetologist and trichologist.
These are best steps for a proper hair wash that’s leaves your scalp in the best condition for hair growth, if you are already using the appropriate products for your hair type.
1. (OPTIONAL) 15 minutes prior to washing, oil your hair with something that has silicones. Silicone based oils will protect your hair from your shampoo, because it is definitely possible to get breakage during hair wash day. A good oil to use on a budget is OGX Coconut Miracle oil (for thicker hair types) and then the OGX Coconut Spray (for finer hair types). This method is also backed up by the Abby Young Method, as Abby Young is also a tricologist. Not only does this protect your hair from shampooing, but it also creates a healthy gloss-like and weightless shine on your hair.
2. DOUBLE SHAMPOO. The first shampoo breaks down dirt and grime. You won’t see much of a lather during your first shampoo as the shampoo cannot suds correctly from the dirt, oil, and product you have on your hair. The second shampoo is where your scalp actually gets cleaned and the active products in your shampoo can directly touch your scalp. For example, if you are using ketoconazole for hair regrowth purposes. This is where balancing oil, soothing inflammation, or supporting growth actually happens
3. Condition your ENDS ONLY. Unless you have drier and/or curlier hair types. Let your conditioner sit for at minimum 5 minutes before washing out, so you get the full benefits.
4. WASHYOUR HAIR WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT NEEDS TO BE WASHED. There is absolutely no such thing as training your hair to be less oily. If you let your hair get consistently oily and allow it to stay oily, it will indirectly cause alopecia. You are clogging your hair follicles and your hair will fall out from the root, causing damage to the follicle with consistent oil clogging.
