What’s with the sudden rush of scam accounts?

9 of my last 10 followers are scam accounts. I’ve had a few months of great engagement with actual people on this app - it’s what I love most about Lemon8! But recently it seems like the scammers are taking over. There’s gotta be something that can be done about this - it’s getting ridiculous 🙄

It's not just you; I've been seeing it too, and it really puts a damper on the fun of connecting with real people here. I remember when my feed was full of genuine creators, but lately, it feels like I'm playing 'spot the bot' every time I get a new follower notification. What I've started doing is a quick check, almost like I'm looking for 'proof' that an account is legitimate, especially when it gives me that weird vibe. Here are a few things I've learned to spot – maybe they'll help you too! First off, always check the profile picture. A lot of scam accounts use super generic images – think stock photos, highly edited, or sometimes just an empty placeholder. If it looks too good to be true, or completely impersonal, that's a red flag. Real people usually have photos that look... well, real! Then, take a look at their username and bio. I've noticed many scam accounts have names that are either a jumble of random letters and numbers, or very common names with extra digits tacked on. Their bios are often vague, promising things like 'financial freedom' or 'amazing opportunities,' usually directing you to 'DM for info' or linking to suspicious external sites. The OCR in the image mentioned a "generic bio," and that's so accurate – they lack any personal touch or genuine interest. Another big one is their follower/following ratio and post history. Many scam accounts will have a disproportionately high number of followers but be following very few people, or vice versa. Even more telling is their actual content. Often, they have very few posts, or the posts they do have are low-quality, repetitive, or completely irrelevant to any niche. It's like they're just there to exist, not to create or engage. Don't forget the call to action! That "yellow 'Follow back'" button mentioned in the OCR? It's a common tactic. They might immediately follow you and expect a follow back, or send you a direct message right away trying to get you off the platform. Be super cautious about any immediate requests for personal information or to move conversations to WhatsApp or Telegram. It's so important that we, as a community, stay vigilant. These accounts don't just annoy us; they dilute genuine engagement and can even lead to more serious issues if people fall for their tricks. My personal strategy is simple: if an account raises any of these red flags, I don't engage. I just report and block them. It's not about being unfriendly; it's about protecting ourselves and keeping Lemon8 a safe and enjoyable space for authentic connections. Let's all do our part to keep our feeds clean and full of real interactions. Have you noticed other signs of scam accounts? Share your tips in the comments below!
