Sunset in Northpark Center
📍 City/Country: Ohio, Midwestern United States of America
Taken around early sunset after late Christmas shopping- or for the new year. I think this was outside a Five Below parking lot tbh and it was barely evening time 😭. That’s something about living up here shows how cold it can get and how dark winter can be that I’m not used to coming from the sunshine state prior.
Our sunsets in the southwest Ohio area are absolutely gorgeous. We just don’t get to see the northern lights like I do up north, and my family up in the UP Michigan. I like that it’s a bit warmer in Dayton though as the further north I go, it gets colder and colder and I’m not used to snow or lakes freezing 🥶.
Peep the car with the headlights on. This is in the historic Old Troy District area off of State Route 202, and is where the city of Dayton begins leaving Miami County or the Tippecanoe area its neighboring city is named after. It is a strip mall area with multiple businesses all down Old Troy Pike and leads to quite the traffic jam.
The traffic is honestly horrible and I would not recommend being a pedestrian there and using the RTA public busing system if available. It is booming with business and is a driving force in the area’s economy employing many from all over the local Dayton area and a place many go out for a bite to eat whether they are on the road or sitting down to celebrate an occasion at one of the many affordable dining options.
Arguably, this is a safer and much more rural area of Dayton with a lower crime rate. There are many places to go and shop and it’s a fun place to explore when in town with friends. We also have a local thrift store, St Vincent down by the Kroger down the road. There’s like 5 different chicken places including Canes and Chick-fil-A, as well as Roosters the local sports bar.
The McDonald’s on 202 is one of the busiest in the state of Ohio, known for its fast-paced environment serving and supporting the trucking industry nearby as it is located off of Interstate 75. It is a privately owned franchise committed to high quality service owning 15 locations across South Ohio, and is one of the biggest employers for the area committed to giving back to our community and helping further improve education as well as other things in our area. They employ veterans across the area and fuel our drivers serving over 100 cars an hour some days.
Rating 4.5/5 for the area
Wow, that winter sunset in the Northpark area really took me back! It's so true how some of the most unexpected beauty can pop up even in places like a busy parking lot. Living in Ohio after growing up in a 'sunshine state' definitely makes you appreciate those vibrant orange and yellow skies even more, especially when the bare trees outline the scene against the early evening light. It's moments like these that make the colder, darker winters feel a little brighter. Speaking of Dayton sunsets, I've noticed a lot of you are curious about catching those stunning views, especially downtown! While my recent snap was from the commercial strip mall area off Old Troy Pike, Dayton actually has some fantastic spots for different kinds of sunset experiences. If you're hoping to catch a true 'downtown Dayton Ohio skyline sunset,' you might want to head towards the riverfront. The Great Miami River offers some incredible reflections, and spots like RiverScape MetroPark or even the bridges crossing the river can provide a fantastic vantage point. Imagine the city lights starting to twinkle against a dramatic sky – it's a completely different vibe than the serene, almost rural feel you get in places like the Old Troy District. For photographing those iconic downtown skylines, I always look for a spot where the buildings can frame the setting sun. Sometimes, even finding a slightly elevated area in a nearby neighborhood can give you that perfect overview. The key is to check the weather forecast for clear skies, and remember that winter sunsets, like the one I shared, often have the most dramatic colors due to the lower sun angle and atmospheric conditions. Those deep oranges and yellows really pop! Beyond downtown, if you're exploring other parts of Dayton for sunset views, I'd highly recommend some of the local parks. Places like Hills & Dales MetroPark or John Bryan State Park (a little further out, but worth the drive!) offer more natural, tranquil settings away from the hustle and bustle. There, you might see the sun dipping behind rolling hills or through dense tree lines, which is a whole different kind of beautiful. It's less about the streetlights and cars, and more about nature's quiet spectacle. One thing to keep in mind, no matter where you're chasing the sunset in Dayton, is traffic. As mentioned in my original post, areas like Old Troy Pike can get quite congested, particularly during rush hour or around the holidays. If you're heading downtown, plan your trip to arrive a bit early, snag a good parking spot, and find your ideal viewing location before the show begins. Nothing ruins a peaceful sunset moment like frantically searching for parking! Also, remember that in winter, the sun sets much earlier, so those 'early evening light' moments are precious and fleeting. Whether it's a bustling commercial strip mall, a quiet park, or a vibrant downtown skyline, Dayton really does offer some surprisingly gorgeous sunsets. It's all about knowing where to look and being ready to appreciate the moment. Each location brings its own unique charm – from the soft glow over a parking lot with headlights coming on, to the grand spectacle over the city's architecture. So next time you're out and about, keep an eye on the sky; you never know what stunning vista Dayton will unveil!
