my first time ever playing stardew!! 🌸✨
the new person i’ve been seeing got the game for the 2 of us so we could play together and i’ve … kind of been hooked ever since 😎
i say “kind of” because there was definitely a good week or so where i didn’t understand it and it was really frustrating. i was really enjoying the plot and everything but little to no tutorials or anything the first few days was … different LOL 😭 if my partner wasn’t next to me explaining and helping me i definitely would’ve given up.
that being said, we started a co-op world together and that’s what we were playing on. i started a single player save for just me and played a few days while we were apart and that’s when everything clicked & i started loving it! i don’t know if that’s a specific me-error or what - but the first few days i definitely wasn’t having fun 😭😅
🌟 the stardew valley wiki is INCREDIBLY helpful - highly recommend if you haven’t used it. i originally viewed it as cheating but i had NO idea how in depth this game was 😅 @caitlin also made a super cute graphic seasonal guide for the game that’s saving my booty every single day!! every time i start playing i make sure my phone is open to the current season so i don’t miss it forget anything 🫶
🔥 i’m now in fall of year 1 and really loving it - i look forward to coming home from work & playing and continuing to learn these characters backstories, advancing the plot and everything else in between! i’m definitely understanding why it’s been so well loved for so long!

i initially was never super drawn to this game because of 1) the graphics, i’m not someone that doesn’t appreciate the pixelated styles but everything being so small AND intentionally pixelated is just hard on my eyes, definitely a me thing
2) the farming & fishing aspect. i play minecraft and animal crossing and several other games that have both and it just seems over done and i want(ed) something else
but since the person i’ve been seeing got it for me i was sort of put in a position to try it anyways and boy i’m glad i did! as i said i really have been enjoying it and the farming & fishing is not bad at all, i actually think fishing is my favorite part of the whole game.
i also had NO idea it had a true plot line, i thought it was just a free-play kind of game where i’d just be running around and fishing and farming to sustain my game life - the other townspeople, the tasks, the backstories, variety of ways to play all make it extremely worth it to me.

Since diving into Stardew Valley on my Switch Lite, I’ve picked up so many little things that might help other new players. It’s truly a game that keeps on giving! One of the first things you encounter is Grandpa's Farm. When I first started, seeing all that land felt a bit overwhelming. I mean, taking over your grandpa's farm sounds easy, right? But deciding where to put everything, clearing trees, and managing energy – it's a lot! My tip for fellow beginners: don't try to clear everything at once. Focus on a manageable section for your first crops and livestock. You'll unlock more efficient tools and find better ways to restore energy as you go. For instance, those early foraging items like Leeks can be a lifesaver for quick energy boosts! I remember thinking, 'What even is a Leek for?' but then it saved me from passing out so many times. Speaking of new beginnings, building relationships is such a core part of the game that I completely underestimated. Beyond just farming, getting to know the townspeople adds so much depth. My early strategy was just to talk to everyone, but I quickly learned that giving gifts is key! Finding out what each character loves or likes takes time, but the Stardew Valley Wiki (my absolute best friend!) is fantastic for this. I've been trying to befriend everyone, and seeing those heart events pop up is so rewarding. It really feels like you're part of the community, not just a farmer! And for my fellow Switch players, especially on the handheld Lite, farming and fishing might feel a bit different with a controller. I found that fishing took a lot of practice – that green bar is tricky! But once you get the hang of it, it becomes really enjoyable. For farming, using the joystick to precisely place seeds and water crops takes some getting used to compared to a mouse, but it’s totally doable. My biggest advice for controller gameplay is to customize your settings if you can, and just keep practicing. The game is so relaxing once you get into the rhythm. For those curious about specific items, like the Mayo Machine, or crops like blue grass, these are things you discover as you progress and upgrade your farm. Blue grass, for example, is fantastic for feeding your animals, and once I understood that, my livestock production became so much easier. Don't stress about knowing everything from day one. The beauty of Stardew Valley is that it unfolds gradually. Just enjoy the ride, explore, and don't be afraid to consult the community or the wiki when you're stumped. Every day brings a new opportunity to learn and grow your perfect farm!
