Apartment complexes and college dorms are absolute havens, particularly around move-out times (think end of semesters or lease changes). People throw out perfectly good furniture, kitchenware, electronics, and even cleaning supplies because it's easier than moving them. I've furnished entire rooms with finds from these locations! When to go is almost as important as where. I usually find the best luck either late at night after closing, or very early in the morning before businesses open. This minimizes any potential disruption to the business and allows for a more discreet experience. Weekends or the days immediately following a major holiday can also be fruitful, as stores often do big clear-outs. Always remember to check local laws regarding dumpster diving in your area to ensure you're not trespassing; being respectful and leaving no mess is key.
