One of the most exciting parts of gardening is discovering new blooms, but sometimes, you might find yourself wondering, "What is this beautiful flower?" Identifying plants can be a fun challenge, and it's super helpful for understanding their care needs and ensuring your garden thrives. I've been spending a lot of time admiring the recent additions to my flower beds, and I wanted to share some tips on how I go about figuring out what's what, especially for those lovely blooms like the ones I've included here! When you're trying to identify an unknown flower, it's helpful to pay attention to a few key features. Look closely at the color and shape of the petals—are they round, pointed, ruffled, or do they have distinct edges? Count the number of petals if you can. Observe the leaves: what's their shape, texture, and how are they arranged on the stem? Don't forget the overall growth habit of the plant – is it tall and upright, bushy, or trailing? Even the center of the flower can offer clues, like the dark, textured center of a blanketflower. Let's talk about some of the specific beauties currently gracing my garden, which I've captured in my photos. Perhaps you've seen them too or can help with identification! First up, the Blanketflower (Gaillardia). These vibrant daisies are truly eye-catching. I've noticed their petals often transition from a bright yellow at the tips to a rich red closer to their prominent, textured center. They bring such a sunny, cheerful feel to any space, and their unique coloring makes them relatively easy to spot once you know what to look for. Then there are the Marigolds (Tagetes), a classic garden favorite! I have a mix, from bright yellow, densely petaled varieties with intricate textures to rich orange ones with yellow-tipped petals. Some of my marigolds even have distinct yellow edges on their orange petals, creating a lovely contrast. You'll often find them with full, rounded forms, and their ruffled petals are just gorgeous. They come in so many shades of yellow and orange, making them a staple for adding a pop of color. I've also got some charming Pinks (Dianthus). These vivid pink flowers, with their distinct serrated petal edges, are so delicate and pretty. They often have a lovely spicy fragrance too, which is an added bonus! Their compact size makes them great for borders or rock gardens. My Snapdragons (Antirrhinum) are putting on a lovely show. I adore their unique, almost mouth-like flowers that, when gently squeezed, 'snap' open. I have some delicate yellow snapdragon flowers, often with green buds and foliage emerging from the stem. They add fantastic vertical interest to the garden. And finally, the Salvia. I have several types, including striking bright red Salvia flowers with numerous small, tubular blooms clustered along upright stems. I've also spotted some delicate light pink and white tubular flowers and buds on another Salvia plant, which offers a softer touch. Salvias are known for their long-lasting blooms and attract pollinators, making them a fantastic addition. Identifying flowers is a journey of observation and discovery.
