CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN!!!
Fluffu and I found bones in a stick fort that we found. The bones were on a philbrick like it was a plate and had the bone marrow taken out. Is it animal bones???
Discovering bones in unexpected places, like a stick fort, can be both intriguing and puzzling. When bones are found laid out on a flat surface such as a philbrick, resembling a plate, it’s natural to wonder about their origin—especially if the bone marrow appears to have been removed. Generally, bones like these are animal remains, as human bones are rarely found in casual outdoor settings without historical context. Animal bones exhibit certain characteristics that can help distinguish them. For example, hollow regions in bones may indicate long bones from legs, while a lack of marrow can mean the bones were processed or scavenged. Bone marrow serves as a nutrient-rich food source for many animals and humans, so its removal suggests that the bones were once used, possibly by wildlife or humans for food consumption. If you encounter bones like these, a good next step is to document their size, shape, and any markings. Animal bones tend to be denser and differ in shape depending on the species — for example, deer bones differ from bird bones. Additionally, if the bones were arranged deliberately or laid on a man-made object like a philbrick, it could suggest human activity or cultural use. For enthusiasts looking to learn more about bones, field guides to animal osteology or local natural history resources can be helpful. It is also important to respect the site and avoid disturbing it further, especially if you suspect any historical or archaeological significance. In summary, bones found in a stick fort on a philbrick are very likely animal in origin, with marrow extraction indicating prior use or consumption. Careful observation and local expert consultation can provide more specific identification and understanding of the bones’ story.
