i’m colorblind DONT ASK WHAT COLOR THE GRASS IS 😭

5/6 Edited to

... Read moreI get asked all the time, "What color is grass to you?" And honestly, it's one of those questions that's both endlessly fascinating to others and a bit tiring for me. For most people, grass is simply green – vibrant, fresh, and unmistakable. But for someone like me, who experiences colorblindness, that iconic green can be a spectrum of other, more muted shades. To break it down, there isn't just one type of colorblindness, and that means there isn't just one answer to the grass question. If you have protanomaly or deuteranomaly, which are the most common forms (often called 'red-green colorblindness'), greens and reds tend to get muddled. For me, what you call 'green grass' often looks more like a dull yellow, a brownish-tan, or even a grayish hue. It doesn't pop in the same way; it blends more with the browns of dry earth or autumn leaves. Sometimes, especially under certain lighting conditions, it can be almost indistinguishable from the surrounding dirt, making a lush lawn appear quite uniform and flat in color. I’ve even tried those apps and filters designed to show you 'what a colorblind person sees' or 'seeing if the colorblind filter is accurate.' It’s an interesting concept, but the truth is, I couldn't tell if they were truly accurate. How can I verify if something accurately represents my perception when my perception is the only one I know? It's a bit like asking a fish to describe water – it's just my reality. The filters might shift colors around, but whether that truly mirrors my internal experience is a mystery even to me. It's a constant reminder of how subjective color perception really is. This lack of true green can impact everyday things. Identifying healthy, vibrant plant life, appreciating a perfectly manicured lawn, or even just describing a scenic view to someone can be a challenge. While I might know intellectually that grass is 'green,' my eyes tell a different story. It’s not a deficit in my world; it’s simply a different way of seeing, a different palette. So, next time you’re enjoying a perfectly green lawn, just know that for some of us, it’s a beautiful landscape, but perhaps in shades you’ve never quite imagined.
