LARP

People keep using the word LARP as if it just means fake.

Old Norse? “LARP.”

Scandinavian music? “LARP.”

Pre-Christian belief systems? “LARP.”

Meanwhile… Tacitus was literally writing about Germanic rituals and cosmology in 98 CE.

These cultures had languages, myths, ceremonies, and philosophical systems centuries before Christianization ever reached Scandinavia. Nothing about that is fake.

But here’s the twist:

When someone says “Everything outside my belief system is LARP,”

they’re not making a historical argument

—they’re making a fear argument.

Because if their definition of LARP = “anything I don’t personally believe,”

then by that same standard…

dogmatic Christianity is LARPing too.

Mark didn’t write the snake-handling verse.

It was almost certainly added in the 2nd century, probably in Armenian.

And every year, people get hospitalized or die practicing it.

So if we’re going to use “LARP” to mean “invented later and dangerously misinterpreted”…

then snake-handling Christianity is literal high-risk LARP with real-world consequences.

The irony?

Actual Old Norse tradition is older, better-documented, and less deadly than picking up venomous reptiles in church.

History isn’t scary.

Ignorance is.

... Read moreI've always been fascinated by the concept of LARP, whether it's seeing amazing fantasy costumes online or stumbling upon references in 'the larper manga' series. It often brings to mind epic adventures and creative role-playing. For many of us, when we hear 'LARP,' we picture elaborate games, intricate characters, and perhaps even 'let's larp' meetups where people genuinely immerse themselves in another world. It's a vibrant subculture, full of imagination and community. However, after reading into this, it really got me thinking about how we sometimes use the word 'LARP' far too casually, almost as a dismissive label for anything we don't immediately understand or agree with. It's like calling something 'fake' just because it's outside our personal experience or comfort zone. The article highlights a crucial point: when cultures like Old Norse, their music, or ancient belief systems are labeled as 'LARP,' it often stems from an ignorance of their deep historical roots and complex traditions. These aren't recent inventions or mere make-believe; they are woven into the fabric of history, complete with languages, myths, and philosophical systems that predate many modern beliefs by centuries. It reminds me of how important it is to actually look at the historical records. For instance, the article mentions Tacitus, who was writing about Germanic rituals way back in 98 CE, in works like "TACITI'S:DE DIVO: CLAVDIO:CAESA SARE:LIBER:QVINTVS". Imagine having such detailed historical accounts! It's such a stark contrast to simply labeling something as 'LARP' without any real understanding. We often forget the richness of documented history. And then there's the more startling comparison: the idea of dogmatic practices, like certain forms of snake-handling Christianity, potentially being a 'high-risk LARP.' This really makes you pause. Thinking about how the verse 'Mark 16:18 Written by an Armenian in 2nd century' came to be added to the Bible, and then seeing the real-world, dangerous consequences for people who practice it, truly puts things into perspective. It's a powerful example of how a later interpretation, perhaps even a misinterpretation, can lead to practices that are far removed from original traditions and carry genuine risks. It's not about judging faith, but about understanding origins and consequences. So, for anyone, like me, who might have casually used 'LARP' to mean 'fake,' this is a huge eye-opener. It's a call to dig deeper, to question assumptions, and to respect the historical authenticity of cultures and traditions, even if they're different from our own. Instead of dismissing things out of fear or ignorance, perhaps we can approach them with curiosity. Understanding the origin of beliefs and practices, whether ancient or more recent, is key to avoiding dangerous misinterpretations. It makes me want to learn more about the documented history, rather than just accepting surface-level labels. It's a reminder that true history, with all its complexities, is far more interesting and often less scary than the easy, dismissive labels we sometimes use.
