tools are tools

The other day I was watching someone talk about the dangers of AI.

And I understood what they meant. But I’m worried a lot of younger people — Gen Z and Gen Alpha — are going to hear something very different.

What they meant was:

Big institutions and megacorporations will use AI to concentrate power, automate jobs, manipulate information, and squeeze people harder.

What a lot of younger people are going to hear is:

“AI is bad. Stay away from it.”

And that misunderstanding matters.

Because in a world where AI exists, not using it doesn’t protect you — it disarms you. If only corporations, governments, and billion-dollar companies get to use these tools, then they get exponentially more powerful while everyone else falls behind.

That’s the real danger.

AI is not just a threat — it’s a force multiplier. Like electricity. Like the printing press. Like the internet. Like nuclear physics.

And here’s the key lesson from history:

Every powerful technology can be used to build power plants or to build bombs.

The problem was never the technology.

The problem is who controls it.

If only the biggest institutions get to use AI, it will absolutely be used to: • replace workers

• manipulate people

• surveil populations

• lock in inequality

• entrench power

But if everyday people learn to use AI — artists, students, writers, organizers, small businesses, independent thinkers — then it becomes something else entirely: a tool for empowerment.

This is why messaging matters so much.

If young people are told: “AI is dangerous, stay away from it,”

then only the most powerful actors will touch it.

And that guarantees the worst-case future.

The real message should be: “AI is powerful. You need to understand it — because if you don’t, someone else will use it on you.”

There is a huge difference between: “Be careful with fire”

and

“Never learn how to use fire.”

One creates safety.

The other creates dependence.

The future isn’t decided by whether AI exists.

It’s decided by who knows how to use it.

We don’t stop nuclear physics.

We build reactors instead of bombs.

We don’t stop computers.

We decide whether they serve people or corporations.

AI is the same.

Fear is understandable.

But fear that turns into avoidance hands the future to the people with the most money and the least accountability.

The goal isn’t to reject AI.

The goal is to make sure it belongs to everyone.

If you want power, you have to understand the tools.

For a college freshman, an artist, a broke grad student, or someone stuck in retail, AI is:

a writing assistant

a research engine

a tutor

a programming partner

a design studio

a legal explainer

a way to make things without permission

1. AI in the hands of corporations

That’s:

job displacement without safety nets

surveillance capitalism

algorithmic exploitation

manipulation at scale

That’s dangerous.

2. AI in the hands of individuals

That’s:

education

creativity

agency

leverage

people doing things they were locked out of before

Attach it to medicine → cures accelerate

Attach it to education → literacy explodes

Attach it to logistics → waste collapses

Attach it to surveillance → authoritarianism hardens

Attach it to propaganda → reality fractures

Just like nuclear physics:

Fission can power a city

Or erase one

The physics doesn’t choose.

The institutions do.

AI power plants

open models

worker-owned tooling

creative amplification

scientific discovery

medical research

accessibility tools

small-business leverage

local journalism

citizen science

AI bombs

mass surveillance

behavioral manipulation

deepfake warfare

algorithmic social control

corporate labor erasure

predictive policing

automated repression

psychological targeting

This is what concerns me the most when listening to people talk about the dangers of AI, is that people will talk themselves out of using the newest printing press out of writing the new “Poor Richard’s Almanack.”

1/3 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience, witnessing the rapid evolution of AI has shown me firsthand how critical it is for individuals to engage with these tools rather than shy away from them. For example, I started using AI-driven writing assistants during my college days, which not only sharpened my research skills but also enhanced my creative expression. Many people think AI will just replace jobs, but I found that when used thoughtfully, it empowers small business owners like myself to compete on a larger stage by automating routine tasks and amplifying creative marketing strategies. Additionally, the power of AI in education cannot be overstated. AI tutors and personalized learning platforms helped me understand complex subjects better than traditional methods allowed, making education more accessible. However, it's clear that when AI tools are monopolized by big corporations, they prioritize profit and control, leading to job displacement and increased surveillance. This reinforces inequality and restricts freedoms. The crucial takeaway is not to fear AI, but to advocate for widespread AI literacy and equitable access. Communities building open-source AI models and worker-owned AI tools represent a hopeful path forward, offering agency to everyday people rather than consolidating power in megacorporations. Just as electricity and the internet revolutionized society when broadly accessible, AI too must be a shared resource. Otherwise, the socio-political consequences—including algorithmic manipulation and deepfake warfare—will grow uncontrollably. To navigate the future, we must treat AI like fire: understand its risks, master its use, and ensure it’s safely managed by all, not just the privileged few. Embracing AI knowledge as a fundamental skill is essential for students, artists, and creators alike. Avoidance only cedes influence to powerful institutions. When used responsibly by individuals, AI can accelerate scientific discovery, medical breakthroughs, and ignite new creative possibilities, turning a potential threat into a tool for widespread empowerment.
