cities are like big families

Cities have generational wealth too — and some of it is 2,000 years old.

When people talk about “generational wealth,” they usually mean families.

But there’s another kind of generational wealth we almost never talk about:

Geographic generational wealth.

Some cities were born rich — not because their people were better, but because they sat on the right roads at the right time.

And a huge amount of that comes from the Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire.

Rome didn’t just conquer land.

It built logistics.

They laid down tens of thousands of miles of stone roads across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Not randomly — but very deliberately:

connecting ports

linking river systems

tying trade hubs together

moving grain, soldiers, taxes, and ideas

Those roads were insanely expensive.

They were engineered to last.

And many of them are still the skeleton of Europe’s infrastructure today.

Here’s the wild part:

Modern scientists use nighttime satellite photos of Europe to see where the brightest lights are — which means where the most economic activity, infrastructure, and population are today.

And when they overlay those images with maps of Roman roads?

They almost perfectly line up.

Not just in Italy.

Across France, Germany, Spain, Britain, Central Europe.

The cities that glow the brightest today are often sitting right on top of:

Roman highways

Roman river crossings

Roman supply routes

Roman trade chokepoints

The Roman Empire fell.

But the roads stayed.

And once a place becomes a crossroads — it keeps being one.

Merchants kept using them.

Medieval kingdoms built castles there.

Markets grew there.

Railroads followed the same paths.

Highways copied them.

Fiber-optic cables run through the same corridors.

You can trace a straight line from: a Roman tax road

to a medieval trade hub

to a modern financial district.

That’s geographic generational wealth.

Take Prague as an example.

Long before it was Prague, that region sat at a natural intersection of:

north–south river routes

east–west land trade

Baltic to Mediterranean supply chains

The Romans formalized those routes.

The Middle Ages built on them.

Modern Europe inherited them.

So when Prague is wealthy today, it’s not because it’s magically better.

It’s because it’s been sitting on a 2,000-year-old highway.

Same for Paris.

London.

Cologne.

Vienna.

Milan.

These cities didn’t start at zero.

They inherited infrastructure that had already solved:

where people move

where goods flow

where armies march

where markets form

That’s why “starting from nothing” is mostly a myth — for people and for places.

Some families inherit capital.

Some cities inherit position.

And position is everything.

You don’t have to be smarter to be richer if the roads keep bringing opportunity to your doorstep for two thousand years.

The past doesn’t just shape history.

It shapes where the money still goes.
