Sometimes I feel like Cassandra

not because I think I’m special, but because I’ve lived inside too many stories.

I grew up inside generational memory:

European refugees from World War II, people who survived famine, exile, pogroms, camps, war, migration. Their lives didn’t just become history — they became patterns in me. When you hear enough real stories about how people break, adapt, survive, and lose, your brain starts recognizing the shapes of things before they fully happen.

So sometimes reality becomes… unfortunately predictable.

Not in a smug way. In a sad way.

You watch a relationship slowly start to crack.

The conversations change.

The warmth cools.

The silences get heavier.

You already know how this arc usually ends — and you desperately hope this time it won’t.

You see a homeless woman walk into a store, grab something big and obvious, and then tell security to call the police.

Most people see chaos.

If you’ve been around long enough, you see survival logic:

Jail is warmer than the street. Food is guaranteed. You won’t freeze to death tonight.

That’s not madness.

That’s game theory under extreme scarcity.

Cassandra wasn’t cursed because she could see the future.

She was cursed because she could see it and couldn’t stop it.

That’s what this feels like.

When you’ve lived long enough, across enough worlds — military, poverty, academia, working class life, immigrant life, refugee stories — you start to see how systems funnel people into narrow choices.

You don’t predict because you want to.

You predict because the same structures keep producing the same outcomes.

And the cruel part is:

revealing the pattern doesn’t always change it.

You can tell people what’s coming.

You can warn.

You can try to slow it down.

But most of the time, the current is stronger than any one person.

So no — I don’t want to be Cassandra.

I don’t enjoy being right.

I would love to be surprised.

I want the relationship that heals instead of fractures.

I want the homeless woman to get housing instead of handcuffs.

I want systems that don’t force people into survival traps.

But until those systems change, the patterns keep repeating.

And sometimes the hardest thing isn’t knowing what’s coming…

It’s knowing you still care enough to wish it wouldn’t.

... Read moreThe story shared here deeply resonates with anyone who has witnessed repeated cycles of hardship and survival within families or communities. Personally, I have experienced moments where I felt like Cassandra—aware of impending difficulties, yet powerless to alter their course. This heightened awareness comes not from a desire to predict doom but from a lifetime of seeing how systemic barriers and social structures funnel people into limited, often painful choices. For example, seeing homelessness through a lens informed by survival logic changes the typical narrative. The desperate actions of a homeless person might be misunderstood as chaos or criminality, but with insight, they reveal a strategic response to extreme scarcity—like choosing jail for warmth and food over unsafe streets. It’s a heartbreaking illustration of how systems unintentionally punish those they fail to support. Living with this knowledge is emotionally taxing because knowing the future doesn’t bring comfort—it reveals the urgent need for compassion and systemic reform. It highlights the importance of advocating for policies that address root causes like poverty, housing insecurity, and mental health support, rather than criminalizing survival behaviors. Moreover, the parallels between broken relationships and wider social failures remind us that the patterns we see on a personal level often mirror societal dysfunctions. Recognizing these patterns is a critical step toward transformation—one that requires both collective will and structural change. Sharing stories like these fosters empathy and raises awareness around the emotional and practical realities that many endure invisibly. While Cassandra’s curse was to see without influence, our challenge is to use that vision to inspire hope, action, and ultimately, healing—not just prediction.
