I grew up around agriculture. I know where chickens come from. They didn’t pop into existence as “chickens.” Humans selected birds with certain traits over generations until we got the animal we now call a chicken. Same with crops. You pick the plants that survive drought, taste better, grow taller, resist pests. Over time, the field looks different.
Music works the same way. It’s cultural selective breeding.
Country, folk, and bluegrass all come from working-class traditions where survival depended on cooperation, practical knowledge, and deep skepticism of distant power. Farmers, miners, laborers, migrants — these were not people who trusted kings, corporations, or far-off governments to have their best interests at heart. Their songs reflected that. They sang about debt, landlords, railroads, bosses, sheriffs, prisons, lost land, and broken promises.
That’s not rebellion for style. That’s lived experience.
For a while, though, some strains of country music got selectively bred toward something else. Big labels, radio consolidation, and political branding rewarded songs that leaned into symbols instead of stories — trucks, flags, vague patriotism, nostalgia with the sharp edges sanded off.
