Let’s pack my hospital bag 🫶🏻🫢
Packing for the hospital is such an exciting, yet slightly overwhelming, part of preparing for baby's arrival! I remember staring at an empty bag wondering where to even start. After going through it myself, I've gathered some extra tips and categories that truly made a difference for my hospital stay, ensuring I had everything I needed to feel comfortable and prepared. For Mom's Comfort & Recovery After delivery, comfort became my top priority. I packed extra soft, loose-fitting pajamas and a comfy robe – trust me, you'll want something easy to move around in. Don't forget non-slip socks, comfortable underwear designed for postpartum pads, and a good nursing bra if you plan to breastfeed. A long phone charger is a lifesaver! Also, a little bag of toiletries like a gentle face wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, a good moisturizer, and lip balm made me feel a bit more human. Many people forget a hair tie or brush, which can make a huge difference in feeling refreshed. And if you're like me, a few healthy, easy-to-eat snacks for those late-night feedings were absolutely essential, particularly when hospital food might not be available or to your liking! For Baby's First Days For baby, less is often more, but a few key items are a must. We packed a couple of soft onesies in newborn size, a special going-home outfit (something adorable but practical!), and a warm blanket for the car seat ride home. While hospitals usually provide diapers and wipes for your stay, having a small pack of your preferred brand for sensitive skin isn't a bad idea. And of course, a car seat, properly installed, is non-negotiable for discharge! For Your Partner (or Support Person) If you have a partner joining you, remind them to pack a small bag too! This often gets overlooked. Essentials include a change of clothes, toiletries, snacks, a book or tablet for downtime, and their own phone charger. They'll be there to support you, and being comfortable themselves helps a lot in those long hours. Important Documents & Miscellaneous Aside from clothing and toiletries, remember your ID, insurance card, and any pre-registration paperwork. A copy of your birth plan (if you have one) is also good to bring. I also found a small portable fan incredibly helpful, as hospital rooms can get warm. Earplugs and an eye mask can be a blessing for trying to catch some sleep amidst the hospital bustle. Final Thoughts & Tips Everyone's delivery experience is unique, but having your hospital bag packed and ready to go takes away one big stressor. I recommend packing it around 36 weeks, just in case! And remember, if you forget something, hospitals typically have basic necessities, or your partner can always run home. Focus on the excitement of meeting your little one!
