books i just couldn't get into 💔

WARNING: MAY BE SOME SPOILERS IN COMMENTS

Usually, I'm really good about finishing the books I start. If it's a classic or a popular book, I feel obligated to say I've read it. But sometimes, I CANNOT STAND having to finish a book.

These are 5 books I tried to read this past year that I had to DNF (did not finish). I'm planning on (hopefully) reading them at some point. Perhaps when I have stronger mental fortitude. Until then, I can complain about these books 💔

Let me know if you've read these books and what you thought about them!!

Lost City Books
2025/6/18 Edited to

... Read moreIt's totally okay to DNF a book! I know the feeling all too well – that little pang of guilt when you close a book halfway through, especially if it's one everyone raves about. We often feel this pressure, especially with beloved classics like Jane Eyre or The Great Gatsby, to power through, even if we're not connecting with the story. But honestly, reading should be enjoyable, not a chore! One common reason I've found myself putting a book down, similar to the experience with War and Peace, is sheer length and density. Some books are just massive undertakings, and if you're not in the right headspace or if the pacing feels slow, it's incredibly hard to stay invested. It's not a reflection on you as a reader, nor necessarily on the book itself. Sometimes, the timing just isn't right. Another big factor is character connection. As some might say, you really need to feel like the reader cares enough about these characters to keep turning pages. If I can't connect with the protagonist's journey, or if I find the motivations unclear, it's tough to stick with it. This can be particularly true in certain genres, like thrillers, where the suspense hinges on your emotional investment in the outcome for the characters. Then there are books that just defy expectations. Take Bunny, for instance. The cover might draw you in, but the surreal, dark academia elements can be a real curveball. Or Salem's Lot, a classic horror novel that simply might not grab you from the first few pages, even if you love the genre. Sometimes a book is praised for pushing boundaries, like perhaps a relationship book that takes satire to a whole new level, and it just doesn't resonate with your personal taste or current mood. It's perfectly fine to say, "This isn't for me right now." I've learned to embrace the 'Did Not Finish' pile without guilt. There are so many amazing stories out there, and life is too short to force yourself through something you're not enjoying. If you're struggling with a classic you feel obligated to read, like The Great Gatsby, maybe try an audiobook version! Sometimes hearing the story read aloud can make it more accessible. For those challenging reads like Jane Eyre, sometimes a break and a return with a fresh perspective is all you need. I've even found that reading a detailed summary can sometimes provide enough context to appreciate the book's significance without having to trudge through every chapter. Ultimately, your reading journey is your own. Don't let perceived obligations or others' opinions dictate what you read or finish. If a book, whether it's a modern cult classic like Bunny or a literary titan like War and Peace, isn't sparking joy, it's okay to set it aside. Maybe you'll pick it up again someday with stronger mental fortitude, or maybe you won't, and that's perfectly fine too! What are some books you've made peace with DNFing, and why?
