how to create the BEST semester schedule 🥰

With classes starting in about a month or so, I've been working on planning a good routine for myself. I'm such a creature of habit that I HAVE to have a strong routine in order to get anything done.

I make schedules like this for myself every semester + the summer so I stay on track. This will be my 5th semester in college and my 5th time making these schedules. Here are some tips on making the BEST routine that works for YOU:

✏️ Start with working around your classes

• The building block of all your routines will be your classes — you are in school to study after all 🥰

• Be sure to fully pick and enroll in all of your classes BEFORE you try to make a semester routine!

• PS: I have a whole post on picking classes if you want some more tips ;)

✏️ Pick wake + sleeping times

• You're gonna be super duper busy in school, so you'll need a good nights sleep to lock in 💪🏻

• Figure out what sleep schedule works best for YOU

• These times will mark the beginning and end of your day, so they'll serve as a foundation too!

✏️ Work around your work schedule

• Usually this isn't something you can just change or be flexible with lol

• Try and see if you can be scheduled the same times each day/week so you can build a nice routine

• Remember to be flexible if there are any changes in your work schedule!!

✏️ Make time for exercise

• It's super important to move your body a few times each week! Find a style of exercise you like

• Figure out how many times you want to work out each week and what time of day you prefer exercising!

• Remember you don't have to have super long gym sessions for them to be effective.

✏️ Estimate how many hours each class will need

• The standard recommendation is 3 hours a week per credit — ex: 3 credit class needs 9 hours a week (INCLUDING class time)

• You don't have to stick to this by any means. Look at the class and Rate My Professor to make an estimate of how many hours each class will need a week!

✏️ Fill in your schedule around what you have so far

• Any open time in your schedule you should fill in with study sessions (ofc not EVERY SINGLE minute of free time)

• Try to break this time up into smaller chunks so you don't overwhelm or overwork yourself

• Give each class a designated study/homework time

Let me know if this was helpful for you or if you want a deeper explanation on any part!!! Making routines is one of my favorite parts about a new semester so this was a lot of fun to create 🥰

... Read moreOkay, so you've got your classes picked and you're ready to tackle the semester! I remember how overwhelming it felt trying to cram everything into a schedule. Building the perfect college class schedule isn't just about academics; it's about making space for everything that makes you, YOU. It's truly a game-changer for reducing stress and crushing your goals. First off, don't forget your social life and hobbies! It's super easy to get caught up in classes and forget to schedule time for friends, clubs, or personal passions. I learned this the hard way – burnout is real! As the 'OTHER TIPS!!!' from my notes remind me, try blocking out specific "fun time" slots in your weekly schedule. Maybe it's a regular coffee date with a friend, an hour dedicated to your favorite sport, or just uninterrupted time for a movie night. These non-academic blocks are crucial for mental well-being and preventing exhaustion. They actually make your study time more effective because you're refreshed. Another critical point, highlighted by my OCR notes, is flexibility. Life happens! You might get sick, a friend might need help, or an assignment might take longer than expected. Instead of getting stressed when your carefully planned schedule goes awry, build in buffer times or "flex blocks." These are periods where you can catch up, relax, or spontaneously join an activity without completely derailing your entire week. It’s all about having a plan but being able to adapt. Now, let's talk about putting it all together. Seeing a 'my (planned) Monday routine as a Sample,' always helped me visualize how it all comes together. For instance, my ideal Monday might look something like this: 7:30 AM: Wake up, light breakfast, quick stretch. 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM: Deep work/Study for toughest class. My brain is freshest then! 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Class 1. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Quick lunch and a walk to clear my head. 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Class 2. 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM: Gym/Exercise. This is my 'energy boost' time – I make sure to 'PICK EXERCISE TIMES!' and stick to them. 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Study/Homework for other classes, responding to emails. This is where I 'FILL IN THE REST OF MY TIME W STUDY SESSIONS' but ensure I'm not overdoing it. 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Dinner. 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM: Hobbies/Social time (e.g., club meeting, call with family). 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM: Prep for next day, light reading. 9:00 PM onwards: Wind down, get ready for bed. This isn't rigid, but it gives you a framework. Notice how I try to 'USE CLASSES AS A BUILDING BLOCK' by scheduling focused study around them. Beyond just writing it down, how do you actually stick to it? I've found a few things invaluable. First, consider digital tools. Google Calendar is a lifesaver for blocking out academic commitments, work shifts, and social plans. You can color-code everything! Apps like Notion or Todoist are great for breaking down assignments and integrating them into your daily study slots. It really helps to 'FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH TIME EACH CLASS NEEDS A WEEK' by breaking down readings and assignments into manageable chunks that fit into your schedule. Another essential tip: do a weekly review. Every Sunday, I spend about 15-20 minutes looking at my upcoming week, adjusting my schedule based on new assignments or social events. This lets me stay on top of things without feeling overwhelmed. And remember to 'PICK WAKE + SLEEP TIMES!' consistently, even on weekends if you can. It makes a huge difference in energy levels and overall focus. I also like to have a dedicated section where I 'REMEMBER YOUR WORK SCHEDULE' so I don't accidentally double-book myself. Sticking to these strategies will help you master your semester!
