When I was in France, I knew I HAD TO VISIT the palace of Versailles!!! I was super excited to see all the luxury. The inside was stunning and full of antique furniture and stunning artwork (if you wanna see some of my pics of the inside, I already have a post up!).
Even though the inside of the palace was so stunning, the gardens outside were my absolutely favorite! There were so many beautiful flowers and some of the greenest grass I have ever seen.
Fun Fact: Louis XIV was super proud of his gardens, especially the HUGE orange trees. He would bring guest out in the garden to show off.
While strolling through the stunning Versailles gardens at ground level was absolutely enchanting, it wasn't until I managed to catch a glimpse from a higher vantage point that the true genius and scale of these gardens truly hit me. It's an entirely different experience, almost like seeing a masterpiece painted on the Earth itself. From an aerial view, the gardens transform into a breathtaking tapestry of geometrically designed landscapes. You can clearly see the intricate patterns of the flowerbeds, the perfectly symmetrical hedges, and the grand pathways that stretch out in a harmonious, almost dizzying display. My eyes were drawn to how every single element, from the meticulously manicured lawns to the rows of potted trees, played a role in this grand, intentional design. It’s a testament to the vision of André Le Nôtre, the landscape architect, and a powerful statement of Louis XIV’s ambition and desire for perfection. What truly struck me was the sheer vastness of the estate. Looking out, you realize the gardens aren't just a small patch of beauty; they extend almost endlessly, culminating in the majestic Grand Canal. This long canal acts as a central axis, drawing your gaze towards the horizon and emphasizing the incredible depth and scale. It's not just a body of water; it's a critical component of the overall geometric composition, reflecting the sky and adding another layer of grandeur to the already impressive scenery. I quickly understood why Louis XIV was so incredibly proud of his gardens. They were not just a place for leisure, but a carefully sculpted extension of his power and aesthetic. To truly appreciate this, I’d highly recommend seeking out any elevated spot you can find, whether it's from the palace windows or specific terraces within the grounds. It allows you to grasp the full extent of the design, the way pathways intersect, and how different sections flow into one another, creating a unified, awe-inspiring whole. It’s certainly one of my favorite vacation stops, and seeing it from above was an unforgettable highlight of my French adventure.
