GRWM | To work a 12 hour Night shift 🤰🏽💗
Working a 12-hour night shift while pregnant can feel like running a marathon before you even get to the starting line! I know the juggle is real – we're preparing for a new life while still showing up for our careers. It’s a unique challenge, and finding your rhythm is key. For those of us navigating demanding schedules, like working PRN or long night shifts during pregnancy, every little tip helps make the journey smoother. First off, the 'GRWM FOR A 12-HOUR SHIFT' takes on a whole new meaning when you're pregnant. Comfort is non-negotiable. I remember trying to find clothes that wouldn't irritate my growing bump or make me feel constricted. My go-to strategy usually involves layering. A soft, breathable maternity top paired with comfortable, stretchy scrub bottoms or work pants is a lifesaver. And yes, sometimes it feels like 'Not Too much on my Wrinkle shirt' is the motto, because who has time for ironing when you're pregnant and getting ready for a night shift? Prioritizing wrinkle-resistant fabrics means one less thing to worry about. Compression socks are also a game-changer for reducing swelling during those long hours on your feet. Packing your work bag with intention becomes a survival skill. Hydration is absolutely crucial, so a large, insulated water bottle is a must. I also pack a variety of pregnancy-safe snacks – think apples, cheese sticks, nuts, and maybe some crackers for nausea. Don't forget your prenatal vitamins! Sometimes, I even bring a small, comfortable pillow for those precious few minutes of break time. It’s all about creating small pockets of comfort where you can. During the shift itself, listening to your body is paramount. If you can, take short walking breaks to keep your circulation going, or elevate your feet whenever possible. Even a quick 5-10 minute power nap can make a huge difference if your workplace allows a designated rest area. I learned to be proactive about asking for brief moments to sit down or stretch. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s self-preservation for you and your baby. And then there's the home life, especially if you have other little ones. Coming home after a long night shift and trying to switch gears can be tough. I resonate so much with 'TELLING THEM TO GO TO BED ON TIME' – maintaining some semblance of routine for your existing kids is vital, even when your own schedule is unpredictable. I found that having a partner or family member who could handle the morning routine after my night shift made a world of difference. If not, prepping as much as possible the night before, like laying out clothes or packing lunches, can buy you precious extra minutes of sleep. Establishing a consistent wind-down routine for myself after getting home, like a warm shower and some quiet time, helped me transition to daytime sleep. It’s not always perfect, but we’re doing our best, mamas!
