What color are my eyes?

... Read moreOkay, fam, let's talk eye colors! I swear, I’ve spent countless hours staring at my own brown iris in the mirror, asking myself, 'What color are my eyes, *really*?' Sometimes they look deep brown, other times I catch a glint of something lighter. It’s a common dilemma, right? Especially when you're trying to figure out if you have beautiful hazel eyes, or if they're just a lighter shade of brown. Most people think of blue, green, and brown, but there's a whole spectrum of unique shades in between! From amber to gray, and those fascinating mixed colors like hazel, it can be tricky to label your own. That's why I put together this little guide based on my own research and observations. Decoding Your Eye Color: Brown vs. Hazel vs. Amber Let's start with brown. My own eyes are a prime example! If you have a deep, uniform pigment, often with warm undertones, you likely have brown eyes. They can range from very dark, almost black, to a lighter, honey brown. The key here is uniformity – usually one solid color throughout the iris. My close-up shots often show that classic brown iris. Now, hazel is where it gets interesting! This is often confused with light brown. Hazel eyes are a mix of colors, usually green/gold near the pupil, blending into brown or amber towards the outer rim. The color seems to shift and change depending on the light. If you see flecks of green, gold, or even blue mixed with brown, you might be rocking hazel eyes. It’s like a little masterpiece in your eye! Amber eyes are often mistaken for hazel or light brown. They're a distinct, solid color, usually a warm, golden, or coppery hue. Unlike hazel, amber eyes don't usually have green or blue flecks; they're more uniform in their golden tone. Think of a tiger's eye – that's a good reference for amber! Other Unique Eye Colors & Shades Blue Eyes: From deep sapphire to icy light blue. Often appear to lighten or darken with mood/light. Green Eyes: Rarer than blue or brown, green eyes are captivating! They can range from a deep forest green to a vibrant jade. Similar to hazel, they sometimes have flecks of gold. Gray Eyes: Ever seen light gray eyes up close? They're absolutely stunning! Often confused with blue, gray eyes have little to no brown or gold flecks. They can appear almost silvery, and sometimes even take on a bluish or greenish tint depending on what you're wearing or the lighting. If your eyes have a cool, smoky hue, they might be gray! Identifying Your Shade: To really pinpoint your shade, look in natural light. Avoid harsh indoor lighting as it can distort your true eye color. Take a close-up photo (like the ones I took of my brown iris!) and compare it to an eye color chart. There are many 'A10 eye charts' or general eye color charts online that can help you categorize. Pay attention to the colors directly around your pupil and the outer ring of your iris. What About Lenses? Choosing Your Shade! For those who love to experiment, colored contact lenses are a fun way to try on a new eye color! When choosing a lens shade, think about your natural eye color. If you have darker eyes like my brown iris, you might need opaque lenses to drastically change the color. Lighter eyes can often use enhancement lenses for a subtle shift. Brands often have their own 'lens shade names,' so it’s worth researching swatches online to see how they look on different natural eye colors before buying. Always consult an optometrist for safe lens use! Ultimately, every eye color is beautiful and unique. Don't stress too much about fitting into a perfect category! The most important thing is appreciating the natural beauty of your own eyes. I hope this little guide helps you on your journey to identifying your awesome eye color. Let me know in the comments what color you think your eyes are!
