The vibrant folk dances, wrestling matches, and bull fights during this time are exhilarating – it feels like stepping back in time to an ancient, joyful ritual. Experiencing the energy of people singing and dancing around the flames under the summer sky is something I'll never forget! Beyond the Torch Festival, two other major traditional festivals often come to mind when people ask about China's most important celebrations: the Dragon Boat Festival and the Lantern Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival), usually in early summer, holds a special place. I always think about how I'd explain it to a young child, maybe a first-grader. I'd start with a brave hero named Qu Yuan. He was a very honest and wise poet who loved his country. When bad people caused trouble and his advice wasn't taken, he was so sad that he jumped into a river. The local people loved him so much that they raced out in their boats, beating drums to scare away fish from eating his body, and threw rice dumplings into the water to feed him. That's why today, we have exciting dragon boat races and eat delicious sticky rice dumplings called *zongzi*! Then there's the beautiful Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao Festival), which marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Imagine the night sky lit up not by fireworks, but by thousands of colorful lanterns of all shapes and sizes! It's truly magical. People go out to admire these lanterns, solve riddles written on them, and eat tangyuan (sweet glutinous rice balls), which symbolize togetherness and completeness. I remember seeing families walking hand-in-hand, carrying their own lanterns, their faces glowing with happiness. It’s a gentle, warm celebration that brings people back together after the bustling New Year, a perfect way to usher in the new year with hopes for brightness and unity.
