Tonka blep!
Oh my goodness, I just had to share this! My sweet cat, Tonka, has this absolutely adorable habit of blepping while she’s deep in dreamland. You know, that tiny little tongue peeking out? It’s one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen, and it never fails to make me smile. Every time I catch her sleeping with her tongue out, I can't help but wonder what she's dreaming about. Is she chasing invisible mice? Is she enjoying a giant bowl of tuna? Whatever it is, she looks utterly content, and that little blep just adds to her charm. For those who might not be familiar, a 'blep' is basically when a cat's tongue slightly protrudes from its mouth, often without them even realizing it. While it can happen when they’re awake, like after sniffing something interesting and forgetting to pull it back in, it’s particularly common and extra cute when they’re in a deep, peaceful sleep. And let me tell you, Tonka has mastered the art of the sleepy blep! So, why do our feline friends, like my Tonka, do this fascinating thing while they’re catching Z’s? From what I've learned, it’s usually a completely normal and harmless sign of a very relaxed cat. When cats are in a deep sleep, especially during their REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle, their muscles relax entirely. This includes their jaw and tongue muscles. Sometimes, this relaxation just causes their tongue to slip out a little bit. It’s like when a human sleeps with their mouth open – nothing to worry about! Another super interesting theory, which I totally believe when I see Tonka doing it, is that it might be connected to dreaming. Cats definitely dream, and sometimes their body language, like twitching paws or little meows, gives us a peek into their dream world. A blep could just be another physical manifestation of those dream activities. Maybe Tonka is mid-lick in a dream, or perhaps she's just so happy and relaxed that her tongue decides to join in on the slumber party outside her mouth! I've also heard that sometimes a blep can happen if a cat has been intensely scent-investigating something right before falling asleep. They might use their vomeronasal organ (Flehmen response) to "taste" the air, and then drift off before fully retracting their tongue. While I don't always see Tonka doing this right before a blep, it's certainly a possibility for some cats. Generally, a sleepy blep is a wonderful sign that your cat feels safe, comfortable, and utterly at ease in their environment. It means they trust you and their surroundings enough to let their guard down completely. If I see Tonka blepping, I know she’s in a state of pure bliss. Of course, if you ever notice excessive drooling, difficulty eating, or if the tongue seems to be out more often than not even when they're awake and alert, it's always a good idea to check with your vet. But for the occasional, adorable sleepy blep, it's just pure cuteness! My Tonka does this a few times a week, and each time, it just melts my heart. It's those little quirks that make our pets so special, isn't it? I love observing her peaceful slumber, and that tiny bit of pink tongue is just the cherry on top.
