🌞🌱 Plants Need Sun and Water
This preschool lesson plan teaches little learners that plants are living things—and just like us, they need the right care to grow! Through hands on experiments, movement games, and daily observation, kids will discover how sun ☀️ and water 💧 help plants thrive. Perfect for Montessori inspired or play based learning. 🌿
For free seed/sustainable option use food scraps! Bell pepper and melon seeds grow fast.

I've always found that hands-on learning makes the biggest difference for young children, especially when it comes to understanding the natural world. My kids absolutely adore gardening activities, and teaching them about what plants need to grow has become a favorite. Beyond just sun and water, which are super important, I love to expand on the '5 things plants need to grow' to give them a fuller picture in a way they can grasp. First, of course, is sunlight. We talk about how plants 'eat' sunshine to make their food, just like we eat our meals. I often point out how our houseplants lean towards the window, showing them where the sun is. Then there's water, which plants drink up through their roots to stay healthy and strong. We have dedicated watering times for our little garden, and my kids take immense pride in carefully giving each plant its drink. This 'watering plants preschool activity' is a hit every time! Beyond these two, we introduce soil. I explain that soil is like a plant's pantry, full of nutrients and a cozy place for roots to anchor. We often get our hands dirty by feeling different types of soil, talking about sand, silt, and clay. And then there’s air! While we can't see it, we discuss how plants breathe parts of the air through their leaves. Lastly, space is crucial. Just like we need room to run and play, plants need space to spread their roots and leaves to grow big and strong. This helps kids understand why we don't plant seeds too close together. One of the most engaging activities we do is 'children pretending to grow like plants activity.' My kids love to start curled up like tiny seeds, then slowly stretch their arms up towards the 'sun' like a stem, wiggling their fingers to represent roots searching for water. It's a wonderful way for them to physically embody the plant growth process. For a deeper 'preschool plant growth observation,' we set up a simple 'plant experiment.' We'll plant bell pepper or melon seeds (they sprout quickly!) in clear cups. One gets regular sun and water, while the other might get less of one, or none. My kids love predicting what will happen. We keep a 'My Plant Journal' where they draw what they observe daily – a tiny sprout, new leaves unfurling. It’s so rewarding to see them connect the dots! To make learning even more fun, we often sing a 'plant poem for kids' (like the 'Plants Need Sun and Water' song) or even make up our own. After that, we grab our dot markers and create beautiful flowers, or practice tracing a potted plant and the word 'plant.' These simple, creative extensions help reinforce everything they've learned while having a blast. It’s amazing how much they absorb when learning feels like play!
