Interview Question Prep ✨

2024/1/17 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk about the dreaded "Tell me about yourself" question. Honestly, it used to make my stomach drop! It feels so open-ended, right? Like, where do I even begin? But I’ve learned that this isn't just a warm-up; it's your golden opportunity to set the stage, control the narrative, and really make an impression. Think of it as your personal elevator pitch, but for your career. My biggest breakthrough came when I stopped trying to recount my entire resume and started focusing on a concise, compelling story that directly connected to the job I was applying for. Here’s how I break it down and what I’ve found works best for me: 1. The Present, Past, Future Framework (My Go-To Structure) Present (30-60 seconds): Start with where you are right now. What's your current role? What are your main responsibilities and biggest achievements? This shows you're actively working and contributing. For example, "Currently, I'm a [Your Role] at [Your Company], where I specialize in [Key Skill/Area] and have recently achieved [Quantifiable Result]." This is where you can subtly weave in how you "thrive in both team and independent settings" if it's relevant to your current successes. Past (30-60 seconds): Briefly touch upon how you got here. What relevant experiences or skills from your past led you to this point? Don't go back to high school! Focus on 1-2 key experiences or transitions. "Before this, I spent X years at [Previous Company] honing my skills in [Another Key Skill], which gave me a strong foundation in [Relevant Area]." Future (30-60 seconds): This is crucial. Connect your past and present to why you're interested in *this specific role and company*. What excites you about their mission or this opportunity? "I'm looking for an opportunity like this [Specific Role] at [Company Name] because [Reason related to company values, challenge, growth, etc.], where I can leverage my experience in [Skill 1] and [Skill 2] to contribute to [Company's Goal]." 2. Tailor, Tailor, Tailor! This isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Before every interview, I spend time looking at the job description and the company's website. What are their core values? What skills are they emphasizing? I then tweak my "Present, Past, Future" story to highlight the experiences and skills most relevant to *that specific role*. It shows you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested. For instance, if they stress collaboration, I'll definitely emphasize my team achievements. If they need a self-starter, I'll mention projects I've driven independently. 3. What NOT to Do (My Mistakes to Learn From!) Don't Rehearse Verbatim (but do practice!): You want to sound natural, not robotic. I used to try to memorize word-for-word, and it always sounded stiff. Now, I practice my key bullet points until they flow naturally. Avoid Irrelevant Personal Details: Unless your passion for competitive dog grooming is directly related to a pet food marketing role, probably skip it. Keep it professional and focused on your career journey. Don't Ramble: Aim for 1.5 to 2 minutes, max. If you go longer, you risk losing their attention. Practice timing yourself! Don't Just Read Your Resume: They have your resume. This is your chance to add personality and context to those bullet points. 4. My Personal Touch: Show, Don't Just Tell Whenever possible, I try to briefly touch upon an accomplishment or a positive trait that aligns with what they might be looking for. For example, if I want to convey that I'm self-driven, I might say something like, "I'm always looking for ways to improve processes, and in my last role, I independently researched and implemented a new tool that saved our team X hours per week." This subtly uses the "independent" aspect from the OCR insight to showcase a valuable skill. Similarly, if they value collaboration, I'd bring up a team project success. Remember, this question is your first big chance to connect with the interviewer. It’s not just about what you’ve done, but who you are as a professional and where you’re headed. With a little preparation and this framework, you'll be able to confidently say, "Tell me about yourself? I'd love to!"
