bengali new year at Utsav NYC🇧🇩✨

Utsav is a spacious, bi-level restaurant in the heart of Times Square and the Theater District, uniquely perched on a skywalk at 1185 6th Ave.

Ambiance: They offer authentic Indian, Indo-Chinese, and Bengali cuisine in Midtown NYC. The decor is very chic at this spot. Spacious with booths and south asian artifacts inside✨

💵 Price:

• puchka $12

• kosha mangsho $30

• enchor er briyani $22

• mishti doi $12

Favorite Item: My favorite was the puchka and the kosha mangsho. Kosha Mangsho is a bengali style curry where slow cooked goat meat with spices & mustard oil blends together. It was soo good with naan and rice.

... Read moreBeyond the delicious feast at Utsav, my experience celebrating Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh) there really opened my eyes to the rich culture. It's not just a meal; it's a vibrant celebration of new beginnings! Pohela Boishakh, literally meaning 'First Baisakh,' marks the first day of the Bengali calendar. It's a time for families to gather, exchange greetings, and enjoy traditional foods, often dressed in colorful attire. Seeing Utsav embrace this tradition made the dining experience even more special. It's a day when Bengalis wish each other 'Shubho Noboborsho,' meaning 'Happy New Year,' and partake in various cultural programs. Experiencing this at a restaurant like Utsav truly makes you feel part of the community and offers a spectacular cultural immersion. When you're trying authentic Bengali cuisine like the Kosha Mangsho I loved, you're not just eating food; you're tasting history and tradition. This slow-cooked goat curry, rich with spices and mustard oil, is a staple in Bengali households, especially during festivities. It's often served with fluffy naan or steamed rice, creating a truly satisfying and intense flavor experience. And let's not forget the puchka – those tangy, spicy street food bites are an absolute delight and a must-try for anyone wanting an authentic taste of Bengali snacks. They offer a unique burst of flavor that's quite different from other Indian street foods, making them a personal favorite. If you're new to Bengali food or Indian cuisine in general, don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations at Utsav. They're usually happy to guide you through the menu, making sure you find something exciting to try. I always find it interesting how different regions within India and Bangladesh have their unique culinary twists. For instance, while many Indian restaurants offer biryani, the 'Enchor Er Biryani' (jackfruit biryani) at Utsav is a unique Bengali vegetarian delicacy that really stands out. It's definitely something to consider if you want an alternative to meat dishes and want to explore the diverse vegetarian options available. Don't drop out on trying new things! Beyond the food, the atmosphere during Bengali New Year celebrations is usually full of joy and community spirit. It's a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture right here in NYC. You might even hear some Bengali music or see traditional decorations, which really encourage a festive mood. Whether you're interested in the food, the vibrant ambiance, or learning a little more about global traditions, Utsav provides a wonderful setting. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural experience that offers a sneak peek into Bengali heritage. So, next time you're in Times Square, craving some authentic flavors, remember Utsav – it's a great spot to try something new, aim for a unique dining experience, and create wonderful memories.
