My heart is still full from celebrating Dashain in Nepal this year! It’s truly the most anticipated and cherished festival, bringing families together from all corners of the country. Being able to experience the vibrant atmosphere and deep-rooted traditions firsthand was an absolute joy. For those unfamiliar, Dashain, also known as Bada Dashain, is the longest and most auspicious festival in Nepal. At its core, it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, specifically commemorating Goddess Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura. It's a powerful reminder that righteousness always prevails. We celebrate it to honor this divine power, seek blessings, and reinforce our cultural values, making it a period of spiritual cleansing and communal joy. My family's Dashain celebration always begins with thorough house cleaning – a tradition that signifies purifying our homes to welcome the goddesses and usher in prosperity. New clothes are a must for everyone, symbolizing a fresh start and renewal. The air fills with the aroma of festive foods and the excited laughter of children flying kites, painting the sky with colorful shapes. It’s truly a magical time, where every street, infused with a unique festive spirit, seems to echo the 'देशे महल धुन' – the nation's festive melody. However, the most central and heartwarming part of Dashain is undoubtedly the family gathering. Relatives travel long distances, often from abroad, to be together. On the tenth day, known as 'Bijaya Dashami,' the highly anticipated Tika ceremony takes place. Elders apply a special mixture of rice, yogurt, and vibrant vermilion (red powder) – called Tika – on the foreheads of younger family members. This red Tika symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, while the white jamara (barley sprouts grown in darkness) represents health and growth. As they apply Tika, elders also offer heartfelt blessings and sometimes a small monetary gift. I cherish receiving Tika from my parents and grandparents; it feels like receiving their wisdom, love, and protection, connecting us through generations. Throughout the extended Dashain holiday, schools and offices close, allowing everyone to fully immerse themselves in the festivities without distraction. It's a time for feasting on traditional delicacies, visiting relatives, sharing stories, and simply enjoying each other's company. Celebrating Dashain in Nepal truly reinforces the importance of family, tradition, and community for me. It’s more than just a holiday; it’s a vibrant expression of our culture and an annual reminder of the blessings we share.
