Rolo’s

... Read moreStepping into Rolo's in NYC was an experience I’d been looking forward to, especially as part of my mission to try every Michelin Guide listed restaurant. While my original review covered the essentials, there’s so much more to share about what makes this place special – and sometimes, a little challenging! Let's talk about the food, because honestly, that’s why most of us are here. The buzz around their lasagna is absolutely justified. I mean, it’s not just good; it’s truly a standout, living up to its reputation as a Michelin Bib Gourmand dish. That vibrant green lasagna verde with bolognese, with its perfectly charred edges, is a masterpiece. It's rich, comforting, and easily something I'd return for alone. If you only order one thing, make it this. Another dish that completely won me over was the croquettes. Made from potatoes and cheese, they’re perfectly golden-brown and generously covered with grated cheese. They’re simple, yet incredibly satisfying – the kind of appetizer that makes you happy. And don't skip the bread! The wood-fired polenta bread is a must-try. I personally preferred the sesame & wild oregano version over the Calabrian chili butter, but both are wonderfully rustic and a great way to start. The Wagyu skirt steak, cooked medium-rare, was also a highlight, incredibly tender and flavorful. And for veggie lovers, the golden beets with aged gouda and orange vinaigrette were a delightful surprise – truly one of my favorite vegetables done right. Now, for the full picture, not everything was a home run. The rigatoni, unfortunately, was a bit of a miss for me – a tad bitter and had an odd sour note. So, if you're looking for pasta, stick to the lasagna or perhaps explore other options like the spaghetti with little neck clams or the ricotta ravioli that I saw on the menu and looked tempting. The drinks menu is surprisingly well-priced for NYC, and the banana espresso martinis are indeed bomb – a perfect blend of sweet and spirited. The ambiance at Rolo's is definitely part of its charm. It's casual yet cozy, with a rustic, dimly lit setting that feels inviting and intimate. It’s perfect for a date night or a relaxed dinner with friends. However, a little heads-up on the service: while the staff were incredibly warm and friendly, we did have to wait about 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. It’s a small point, but good to know when planning your evening. Despite the wait, the overall experience was positive, and I’d still highly recommend it for those looking for a delicious meal in a great atmosphere. Just make sure to book ahead and perhaps build in a buffer for your reservation time!
