Five Year Loc Growth: Here’s what I did

1. Low manipulation:

Styles are fun and cute, but can be unhealthy. Styling often may cause tension on roots and cause thinning or breakage. Just let them flow and grow !

2. Hydrate daily:

The most effective way to hydrate hair is with WATER. Heavy moisturizers and/or leave-ins may cause build up and weigh down hair.

3. Protect while asleep:

Wearing a bonnet or using a silk pillow case will help keep locs moisturized and keep lint away!

4. Stay away from products:

Don’t over think. Locs thrive when you keep it simple. I only use shampoo, retwist gel, water and edge control. Occasionally I will oil my scalp.

5. Nurture from the inside:

If you are healthy on the inside, your outside will reflect that. Take your vitamins, drink your water, and eat healthy

6. Be patient:

Locs go through many phases. Some may be more appealing than others. Enjoy your locs at every stage.

... Read moreAs you embark on your loc journey, understanding the stages of loc development is essential. In the first year, your locs may feel loose and may not look as defined. This is a natural part of the process. Embrace this phase by ensuring minimal manipulation and allowing your hair to form locks naturally. Year two often brings more maturity, and you might notice your locs starting to tighten and gain some length. Keep following the essential hydration practices, ensuring your scalp remains healthy. By year three, your locs may reach their full potential in terms of strength and definition. However, remember that maintenance remains crucial. Simplifying your product choices, as you mentioned, will prevent unnecessary build-up. Year four is a time for experimenting with styles while continuing to provide nourishment from within through balanced nutrition and hydration. Finally, in year five, many find their locs at their most beautiful and resilient. Enjoy experimenting with different styles and accessories while continuing to care for your locs with patience and love. Always remember that the journey is unique for everyone, and self-care plays a pivotal role in achieving and maintaining healthy locs.
