Technology has changed how we learn, communicate, and solve problems. But after seeing a video where several Gen Z adults couldn’t read cursive or tell time on an analog clock, I couldn’t help but wonder if we’re losing some foundational skills.
Growing up in the digital age, I've noticed firsthand how technology has reshaped everyday learning and communication. While gadgets and apps offer incredible convenience, there’s an unintended side effect: fundamental skills like reading cursive handwriting or telling time on an analog clock seem less familiar to younger generations. I recall revisiting my own school days when writing in cursive was a key part of the curriculum and learning to read an analog clock was essential. Today, digital clocks dominate, and cursive handwriting isn’t emphasized as much. This shift makes me wonder if we’re missing out on cognitive benefits linked to these skills—like improved motor skills, memory retention, and pattern recognition. Interestingly, this change also impacts real-life situations. For example, some official documents still use signatures in cursive, and many public clocks or watches have analog faces. Without the ability to interpret these, younger people might face unnecessary challenges. While technology offers alternatives, I believe that balancing digital skills with foundational ones enriches learning and keeps our cognitive abilities sharp. Incorporating activities like reading handwritten notes or practicing analog clock reading can help preserve these skills without hindering technological progress. From personal experience, blending traditional skills with modern tools has boosted my problem-solving and adaptability. As we move forward, ensuring foundations like cursive reading and analog time-telling continue to be valued will support a well-rounded education for all generations.
