From my personal experience living in Minnesota as an immigrant, I’ve found that small daily actions can make a big difference in maintaining mental health, especially during times filled with fear and uncertainty. When feelings of sadness or anxiety arise, one of the most helpful techniques I use is the simple breathing exercise mentioned: inhaling slowly for 4 seconds and exhaling for 6 seconds. This helps calm both the mind and body, reducing immediate stress. In addition to breathing, I find that not isolating myself is crucial. Talking with trusted friends or family members provides emotional relief and reminds me that I’m not alone. During difficult news cycles, I take deliberate breaks from the media to protect my mental space—setting my phone to 'Do Not Disturb' and avoiding continuous exposure to stressful information can prevent feeling overwhelmed. Physical activities like walking have been incredibly beneficial. Walking outdoors gives me time to clear my head and reduces anxiety. Music is another powerful tool; I often listen to calming tunes that help soothe my nervous system. Writing down my thoughts and feelings also serves as a healthy outlet to release emotions that otherwise build up. Importantly, caring for our mental health is not just an individual act but a form of resistance and community care. Sharing these small but impactful practices with other immigrants and community members has fostered a supportive environment where no one has to face their struggles alone. Remember, taking these small steps daily contributes to long-term resilience and emotional well-being.
