Front Garden
She was full of life a few weeks ago, vibrant colors in those petals, cute little bugs all flying about. But now she’s returning to the earth to make preparations for the next years new tenets. Always guarded by our gonk Jeremy. #gardenbed #gonk
It’s always a little bittersweet watching the garden shift from the vibrant explosion of summer to the quieter beauty of autumn. Like you, I find myself reflecting on the changing seasons in my own front garden, especially as my pretty pink flowers start to fade, returning their energy to the earth. It's a wonderful reminder that every ending is just a new beginning! For those of us looking to keep our outdoor spaces charming and inviting, even as the temperatures drop, I've found some lovely ways to embrace the season. One of my favorite tricks for keeping things fresh (and easy!) is incorporating garden with pots ideas. While my main garden bed, like yours, is a permanent fixture, pots offer so much flexibility! I love filling them with seasonal plants like colorful mums, pansies, or even small ornamental cabbages that thrive in cooler weather. They’re super easy to swap out, so you can keep your porch (especially if you have a lovely white porch like mine!) and pathways looking fantastic even as the rest of the garden takes a break. Plus, you can tuck them right into spots in your wooden garden bed where summer annuals have finished their show. Speaking of decoration tree for garden and general decor, autumn is truly a time to shine! Beyond just flowers, I adore bringing in natural elements. We're talking gourds, corn stalks, and of course, pumpkins! I chuckled when I saw your black pumpkin decoration and striped yellow pumpkin – they sound adorable! I often scatter a mix of pumpkins and small gourds around my garden bed and on the steps leading to my white porch. And yes, a trusty garden gnome (like your Jeremy!) always adds such a whimsical, personal touch. For a more lasting decorative element, I’ve considered adding a compact evergreen shrub in a decorative pot by the entryway; it offers year-round greenery and can be easily adorned with fairy lights for a magical evening glow. When it comes to general gardening in the fall, it's all about preparing for spring. Once my summer blooms have completely faded, I like to snip them back and clear out any spent foliage from the green ground cover and grass around my garden bed. This helps prevent diseases and keeps things tidy. It’s also the perfect time to plant spring-blooming bulbs like tulips and daffodils – imagine the anticipation of those first pops of color next year! I also give my established perennials a good layer of mulch; it helps protect them from winter freezes and feeds the soil. It’s a little bit of work now, but it makes such a difference for next year's bounty. Happy fall gardening!
