Inheritance
by Echoes of Murder
I was born from thunder,
the kind that shakes the house but never brings rain.
Her voice, a storm I learned to forecast.
Loud mornings followed by sudden silence and cold shoulders.
She gave me her eyes,
but I use mine differently.
She looked for control;
I look for love.
I learned early how to mother myself.
bandaging words that cut too deep,
singing lullabies to my own reflection,
learning that love is not supposed to taste like tears.
Now, when I hold my daughter’s face,

“You are safe.
You don’t have to earn softness.
You don’t have to shrink to be loved.”

I forgive what she could not be.
not for her,
but for me.
