The Difference Between Intuition and Hypervigilance
Many people mistake hypervigilance for intuition because both can feel like a warning.
But they come from very different places.
Intuition is calm.
It doesn’t usually shout. It doesn’t create panic. It often feels like a quiet knowing that something is right, or not right, even when you can’t explain why.
Hypervigilance is anxious.
It scans for danger. It looks for signs that something might go wrong. It replays conversations, analyzes people’s behavior, and prepares for the worst just in case.
Intuition says:
“Something feels off.”
Hypervigilance says:
“Something is off, and I need to figure it out right now before something bad happens.”
Intuition creates clarity.
Hypervigilance creates urgency.
One comes from inner wisdom.
The other often comes from experiences that taught you it wasn’t safe to relax.
If you grew up in an environment where you had to constantly read moods, anticipate problems, or stay alert to avoid conflict, hypervigilance may have become a survival skill. It helped protect you.
The challenge is that survival skills don’t always turn off when the danger is gone.
The next time you get a feeling about something, pause and ask yourself:
🗝️ Is this a calm knowing?
🗝️ Or is this fear asking me to stay on guard?
Learning the difference can change the way you trust yourself.
