The incredible story happened when an ordinary former Indian student was found by chance in the New York subway, and just a year later she opened a show for Chanel.
Bavitha was a student at NYU who studied Interactive Design, had no connection to fashion. Life was like a normal student until one day she passed a man in a subway station and asked him one word: Have you ever been a model?
The man was Matthieu Blazy, the creative director of Bottega Veneta, and that short sentence changed the course of her life forever.
After being approached in a subway station, she immediately made her debut as Bottega Veneta's Exclusive Model, a debut that could hardly be called a phenomenon in fashion.
Later, Matthieu Blazy moved on to take over as Chanel's creative director and he took Bavytha, who became his Meuse, to a new home as well. In December 2025, Bavytha was selected as the opening model for the Chanel 2026 New York show. For the first time ever, a model of Indian descent has walked the opening show of this legendary brand.
But the most imprinted moment is here. The venue of this show was the same subway station where she was first discovered, and the opening look was designed as a reference to the dress she was wearing that day: jeans and a simple sweater.
From a student who is not involved in fashion to walking the Chanel show at the same beginning as the day she was discovered, Bawetha's story is actually the perfect life movie in a full circle.
