Where did that come from 😭

2025/1/1 Edited to

... Read moreYou know how sometimes a phrase just pops out, and you think, 'Wait, where did that even come from?' That's been me lately! I've been super curious about the origins of some of our everyday expressions, and honestly, the backstories are often way more interesting than you'd expect. It's like finding a hidden gem in plain sight! Take 'break a leg,' for example. We say it to wish someone good luck, especially before a performance. But why something so seemingly violent? Turns out, it's rooted in theatre superstition! Back in the day, wishing someone good luck was considered bad luck. So, actors would say the opposite, hoping to trick mischievous spirits. Another theory links it to bowing (bending the knee/leg) after a performance, or even the idea of breaking the 'leg line' of the stage curtain to get an encore. Either way, it's far from literal! Or how about 'bite the bullet'? This one always conjured up a dramatic, old-timey movie scene for me. And it's pretty close to reality! During the days before anesthesia was widely available, especially on battlefields, patients undergoing painful surgery might be given a lead bullet to clench between their teeth. This wasn't just to muffle screams; it also helped prevent them from biting off their tongue or dislocating their jaw during intense pain. Talk about toughing it out! Then there's 'spill the beans.' This one means to reveal a secret, often accidentally. Its origin is a bit less dramatic but still fascinating. One popular theory traces it back to ancient Greece, where votes were cast by placing white or black beans into a jar. If the jar was accidentally 'spilled,' the votes would be revealed prematurely. Another idea comes from informal gatherings where a secret would be shared by each person adding a bean to a pot; spilling them would expose the secret. Either way, it's about revealing what was meant to be hidden. And for a personal favorite, 'fly off the handle.' We use this to describe someone suddenly losing their temper. Imagine an axe head, not properly secured, flying off its handle when swung. Not only is it dangerous, but it's also completely uncontrolled and unexpected. That vivid image perfectly captures the sudden, uncontrolled outburst of anger. It’s a great visual metaphor, isn't it? It's wild how much history and cultural context are packed into the phrases we use without a second thought. It makes you wonder about everything else, doesn't it? What's your favorite saying with a surprising origin? Or is there one you've always been curious about? Share your thoughts – I'd love to hear them!

Where does adhd come from?
So many different answers pop up when I look into this question. And I never find a direct answer. ADHD can develop from what I’ve learned, over a lot of different reasons. 1. Genetics: it can be passed down from parent to child and there are even studies that show the connection to genetics an

We are *always* asked where we got our photo ledge from... Well, we made it! When I was searching around for the perfect length, the closest we found was one at Pottery Barn for upwards of $350+ and we were like... maybe not. I found a tutorial online and the whole thing cost maybe around $30
