Mt Desert Campground at Acadia National Park

... Read moreSo, you're thinking about tent camping at Mount Desert Campground in Acadia National Park? Let me share a bit more about our incredible experience and some tips I wish I knew beforehand! This place is truly a gem, offering a rustic yet comfortable escape right in the heart of Acadia. Booking ahead is NON-NEGOTIABLE, especially if you're aiming for peak season. We snagged a spot for September 2025, and believe me, they fill up fast! One of the best things about Mount Desert Campground is its unique location. It sits right on Somes Sound, the only fjord on the East Coast! While our specific site didn't have water views, the proximity means you're never far from breathtaking scenery and easy access to Acadia's famous hiking trails and carriage roads. For tent camping specifically, come prepared for all types of weather. Maine can be unpredictable, even in September. Our 3m bell tent was a lifesaver – spacious enough for us and Koko, and surprisingly sturdy against the evening breezes. It made our first tent camping adventure with a puppy so much more comfortable than I ever imagined! When looking for Acadia National Park camping sites, consider what you prioritize. Do you want shade? Proximity to restrooms? More privacy? Mount Desert Campground offers a variety, from more open grassy areas to wooded, secluded spots. Each site generally comes with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for those quintessential camping meals. Make sure to check the size limits for tents carefully when booking, especially if you have a larger setup like our bell tent. Knowing these details beforehand can really enhance your camping in Acadia National Park experience and help you pick the perfect spot. Camping in Acadia National Park with a dog like Koko was an absolute joy! Acadia is incredibly dog-friendly, with many trails allowing leashed pets. Just remember to always clean up after them and keep them under control to protect the wildlife. We found plenty of scenic spots for walks right from our campsite. Beyond the campground, Acadia offers so much: exploring Bar Harbor, hiking Cadillac Mountain, or simply driving the scenic Park Loop Road. Having our tent as a cozy base made daily excursions so easy and enjoyable. It truly felt like stepping into nature's embrace, and I'm already dreaming of our next trip back!
