Why Didn't This Battery Go BOOM💥 After A Puncture
In today's technical breakdown, we're going to discuss why the lithium Polymer (LiPo) from yesterday's video did not have a thermal event after being punctured by a nail.
Lithium based cells chemestries are notoriously unstable. LiPo batteries like the one in this video will start to swell after aging and possibly rupture causing allot of damage. This cell in particular is from 2018.
I attempted to use a nail, short the battery, and cause some form of thermal event, but I didn't even get a little smoke.
The reason for this: Energy. If a cell is completely dead (0V) then is has no energy left to give during a short circuit condition.
No energy + No Voltage = No Event.
Be careful. I was blessed (thank you Lord) that this battery did not create a thermal event while in my desk drawer and a battery in this condition should never be charged.
